A genuine query raised by many is whether a Double decker train will be able to run on our present infrastructure. A right answer to this query does not exist in the present scenario. We will have to await the results of studies conducted by the Indian Railways and the Goverment of India on how to ensure that Double decker trains run in India.

Another query which precedes all queries is what did the Honourable Minister mean by a Double decker train? Does it equate to a standard Double decker bus? Would it have 2 different levels on which passengers can occupy seats and travel or does it actually mean a double berth train! I'm certain to a degree that it would not mean the latter since the latter already exists in the form of the AC 2-tier.

Bringing in Double decker carriages means a lot of change to the current design of the carriages. A good part of the rail lines in India are electified and thus increase in the height of the trains upwards to accomodate a Double decker level would be almost impossible to acheive. On the other hand, since the Honourable Minister has specified that these double decker trains would be Air-Conditioned, there are a lot many items which go onto the undercarriage of the train. Batteries, air tanks, A/C equipment, fresh water tanks, waste tanks, traction motors, diesel engines or transformers are all items which are fixed onto the undercarriage. So lowering the floor on these Double decker trains while ensuring that all carriages are air-conditioned is also a very difficult proposition. Once lowered, the floor of the lower level of the carriages would be under the level of the majority of the platforms in India. It would be difficult, not impossible, to enter and exit the trains for the general masses.

What remains to be seen is whether, given the technological hurdles present in the current infrastucture, can the Railway engineers rise to the occassion and produce some of the brightest ideas for acheiving the target set out by the Honourable Minister. When they do, i'm sure we'll have added another feather to our cap of innovations which have helped not just India, but also the entire world, to become a better place to live in.

Feasibility of this idea must be discussed.

Since we already have tiers, first we will have to understand that what she means by double deck.

Dikshit sir before doing anything new like these they will completely assess the situation whether the idea is feasible or not and then take decision, so Mamata banerjee would have consulted her counterparts on this regard and railway officials to come to the conclusion..so may be they have some idea to come up with the double decker AC coaches, but currently it is not possible with the electric lines as it has been set at specific heights for the normal running trains...so have to wait and see how the project unfolds in the coming days after the budget.........
