Google has defined a new protocol called the "Wave Protocol" to implement their collaboration platform. This protocol is based on XMPP, an IETF protocol, defined for chat messages/instant messengers.

Google is using this protocol to do real-time collaboration and update of multiple screens at the same time. They take each typed character and send it as a packet to all the people viewing that conversation.

What do you think of the wave protocol? Isn't that a very inefficient way of sending data across? Will this protocol scale? Are there network enhancements needed to support it?
