Has anyone used the SSE-CMM methodology within their organizations, and to what extent have you been successful? SSE-CMM is also ISO/IEC 21827.

Yes. I had an contractor working under the aegis of NSA do an IACMM ( a subset of the SSE-CMM) assessment of my security organization. Biggest value is that it brought out that we needed to focus increasing our understanding the threats against our systems. This has helped us become more proactive in determining our security strategies.
