I think we have to rethink the whole concept of civil society. It is fast turning into group of ego-centric bunch of crowd having different motives, agenda etc.

I think those who are serious among them should form a political party and fight an election. Let the people decide.

Whether we like it or not, the people have elected this Lok Sabha. Being the head of the this Parliament, Manmohan should be allowed to run the government until he losses the trust of the Lok Sabha. That is basis of Parliamentary government. He cannot be dictated to act according to the feelings of people who finally are not answerable to the nation.

Yes , you are right james up to some extent that civil society can just suggest only dictating terms is not their right to do so. ublic want to remove corruption but it doesn't mean undemocratically. It must be with a fair process.

Few people should not be construed as giving shape to the definition of civil society.Civil society has to remain apolitical, if they form political party, they do not remain civil society.

Can understand the emotions prevailing with my friends on the discourse. And wish I had a magic wand to cleanse the system overnight. But frankly the shrill frenzy on government actions like police clampdown on Baba Ramdev is uncalled for.

Democrazy as a structure, calls for measures that have to be taken. These take time and no result will be achieved overnight. Ofcourse we have made tremendous improvements in the last 60 odd years. Frankly just take a index of countries that won independense the same time as us and compare it with us. In terms of democratic institutions functioning, educational institutions, economic growth, social growth and also defense, we have improved tenfold and are far above our neighbours. It is a shame to say we failed for 60 years.

My point is specific, why don't those who belong to civil society form a full fledged political party and fight the election? Defeat the present government and do the needed correction? Nobody is questionning the crediatials of most of them. But they know they cannot run the government. Creating a hallow of purity around oneself is one thing and acting is another. Frankly I am totally dissappointed with Annaji. Thought he would have been the right person to back the government in these steps needed to further strengthen our anti corruption mechanism. Either ambition has overtaken his passion or he has lost control of the civil society movement. I would like to think the latter. He no longer calls the shots in the movement. He is just the mascot. Same happened to a certain JP Narayanan & VP Singh

Any way a non-elected body cannot be allowed to bring paralysis to the elected government. That is the fundamental of parlimentary party. Correct me if I am wrong my friends. I feel very stronly about this.

Vinoy, a nice subject you have raised.

It has been three decades that India became independent.

The governance that we had before British took over was where a local ruler or chieftain would govern. Some were good others not so good yet every one got sufficient and thus the term "Soney ki chidiya" found mention. British left yet the same rule books, the same aristocracy and same oppression continues and now we have a huge malnourished hungry populace, why?

If there was a will with those in power to course correct do you think six decades were insufficient. If Anna and Ramdev take initiative and raise the issues how should a person who feels for nation react?

Uprising of this nature in a world's largest democratic country like India is not called for.  Have you ever imagined who was responsible for it.  You have a proxy personality ruling the democratic country by inducting a very weak personality, who has not fought elections in his own right, to rule this very massive country with a population of 121 crore and allowing our tax payers' money to be stashed away in foreign countries, allowing the ministers in his own cabinet to loot the country in day-light, not taking cognizance of findings of the statutory organisations and the  agencies under his own control, covering every issue by ducking under "coalition dharma", etc., what else can you expect other than civil society organisations taking this issue to street.  Every true Nationalist will raise his voice against this mockery of democracy - this is not ego-centric bunch of crowd!  This issue is much more serious than what you think we are going through, yet our people are very controlled and not violence-mongers.  They have imbibed the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in true spirit and have not taken to different path!

Dear sir, I respect you for your values and opinions. We have not elected Manmohan as PM. He is chosen by Sonia. He can be changed overnight irrespective of your/my opinion. He lost the trust of the people. No community/religious feelings. India has lost faith on congress and particularly the PM. I equally oppose Baba Ramdev, Kapil Sibal and Chidambaram who are trying to make a mockery of democrasy or people's will in India. Sorry to differ with you. Txs.
