A consultant is one who gets to know of the problem from you, reasons for it again from you, possible solutions also from you!  He will tell you how to select the best solution.  He will then say, the final decision is yours.  And sends you the bill!!

just in jest.  Sudeep Tarafdar has covered all points.

They analyse the problem, establish possible reasons for this, and then suggest solutions for it. They have an outside view.

It always helps for a decision maker to take a consultant with him on important matters.  The consultant would be able to suggest solutions as also his opinion on what the other person is trying to communicate.  The "C" sense! (it is not hunch or instinct but a strength acquired out of experience and knowledge) of the consultant would help analyse the opposite number better.

While on the topic, India has still not grown to the level.  May be, we (i started as a consultant in 1991 and was mistaken for an agent!)  are a little ahead of the time.  We still see entrepreneurs and decision makers to weigh our knowledge on the one hand and the money being paid on the other.  They should understand that it is not quantity but quality that matters.

Consultant job is like he should be knowing most of the things, Consultants get called into businesses and companies that are suffering some or the other problem, they analyse the problem, establish possible reasons for this, and then suggest solutions for it.

They 'consult' most of the time for answers because consultants will have an outside view, and as a consultant they will have a varied background, and they charge them for both for their time to analyse, their opinions on them, and finally for their answers.  Basically, they get paid to criticise the way they do their businesses, and then to lend their knowledge to them, they require a good perspective, a critical stance, and broad experience of lots of situations. This is what a consultant does.....hope you got your answer..
