An Indian court overturned an archaic law yesterday on 2nd July and decriminalised homosexuality - a move rights activists hope will go towards legalising gay sex just as 115 countries have done.

A May 2009 report by the International Lesbian, Gay (Bisexual, Trans and Intersex) Association (ILGA) said homosexuality is legal in 115 nations. Discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited by law in 48 countries and marriage was open for same-sex couples in seven countries.

On the other hand, 80 countries consider homosexuality illegal. Homosexuality invites death penalty in five countries - Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen.

The report - State-Sponsored Homophobia 2009 - is based on research conducted by Daniel Ottosson, Sodertorn University College, Stockholm, Sweden.

ILGA, founded 1978, is a world wide network of 670 national and local groups dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people in around 110 countries.

We have NOT finished the problems of hunger, diseases, and natural disasters.

We STILL have to go a long way before having the luxury of thinking about the problems related to the lower part of the body.

Ahmed I quite agree with your comment. On a lighter note India has always been recognised on the global map and this scenario has just brightened the highlight.

Latest Update: The National Commission for Women yesterday(4th July) called for a nationwide debate on the Delhi High Court's landmark ruling that decriminalised gay sex in the country. However, Moily later told reporters that they would submit a report to Prime Minister, who would take a final decision on whether to amend the archaic law dealing with the issue.

there may be only some sort of fetid pleasure in homosexuality and it is not the need for anyone.that act is highly unnatural and it should not be legalised for any reason and contexts.i think honourable court of law should have used its conscience before delivering a judgement of this kind.

Mr. Siddiqui, you have answered your own question. After yesterday's judgment, India figures amongst the 115 countries where gay sex is legal and discrimination on basis of sexual orientation is illegal. Your next question/debate/insight would probably be about making child adoption by same-sex couples legal in India. That would complete the circle. Right?
