" IT'S A BIG QUESTION FOR THE FRESH PGDM/IT STUDENT,HOW TO START THEIR CAREER AS SAP CONSULTANT OR BUSINESS ANALYST AND HOW TO GET INTO B2B SALES OF IT PRODUCTS.
Hi,
I am working as a Business Manager & My responsibility is to handle the sales cycle of CRM. I would like to know whether this experience is going to help me to become an ERP consultant in the coming years & if yes then what are the steps that i need to take to align myself in the attainment of my goal of ERP consultant? What could be the package that i could get? What are the qualities that i need to inculcate? Tell me about these things. I AM VERY DEPERATE TO KNOW.
Thanks
Abhinav
Hi Prakash,
Given that you already have a PGDM in IT, I assume that you already have a good grasp of broadly how any business operates (i.e. business functions and their role in the chain of transactions) and how IT can improve business process efficiency of an organization.
Next, you need to learn about what an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software such as that provided by SAP or Oracle is and how it fits into the existing business infrastructure of an organization. Try to read up on what all an ERP system can do, the kind of efficiencies it can deliver, the standardization that it can bring in the way a business process (e.g. Sales Order Processing) is executed in different departments/locations the biz operates in. Read up on CRM, SCM, SRM, FIN etc..
You also need to understand the underlying technology (atleast the basics) that the ERP system is based on - such as "Software as a Service (SAAS)" and how this technology makes a difference to the consumer (whether lower total cost of ownership i.e TCO due to a 'pay-per-use policy', or ease of maintenance / up-gradation, etc). Also know what other commonly used terms such as "on-demand" means. Basically keep yourself abreast of the latest in the business.
All this is the groundwork to display some awareness & inclination during the interview. Other than that just keep applying to companies that develop/maintain ERP systems and connect your degree/experience to broader ERP concepts if possible.
I hope this helps to answer your question. Feel free to write back with more specific questions if required.
Cheers,
Amit
