Today the number of social networking sites are increasing with time. The best we know and love is about facebook. But there are so many other networks and toostep is another good example as we use it almost everyday.
The users may find them very amusing, interactive etc,. etc,. But apart from the ads on the side pane of any social networking site what and how are these sites beneficial or profitable to a marketer in today's environment. What can be the future of these sites and their role in our daily lives in the future days to come.
According to their website, Facebook for example connects with more than 500 million potential customers worldwide.

@Shailesh, very well. That could be true. It can be a very useful tool for online personal selling. But, If I or you were to launch a social networking site what other benefits can there be apart from advertising of various products? In this case we are the marketers...
These social networks really are building relationships online. These are very helpful in extending our freindships and other relationships to other areas too even there where we have never been. If someone is in our freind list in any social site and if we will suggest any product to use I think it will affect him more than a advertisement on television. We can make thousands of freinds in there and can interact with them everyday. If we market any product online it will affect same as the, person to person selling. In this way we can say that these are really helpful in marketing.
