What are the particular challenges a CIO faces integrating IT with the business in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries?

I think one of the major challenges is the competing needs in healthcare.
- You
have clinicians needing one thing,
- the finance people needing another,
- the HR
folks on yet another angle, and
- all need to inter-operate.
This is then magnified by the need to inter-operate with organizations outside the walls of the hospital/medical centre etc - government, other providers, insurers etc etc. Naturally, when you sit all the stakeholders down to understand their needs and wants, you will get many many answers.
This is possibly why there are so
many train wrecks in health IT over the years. One other issue is that Health
execs often still see IT as a black hole that sucks money and resources, but
offers little value to the organisation, hence the low percentage of
revenues/budgets we see in health IT - usually less than 3-5%.
