I was wondering from where Open source products like firefox and Linux gets funding?
How does they support companies like Mozilla Foundation?
Donations play a crucial role in supporting Free and Open Source Software projects. At times readers will write in to share their positive experience with a utility or program or a distribution that I have written about. Now don't confuse them with your average technical-bent-of-mind Linux user. These are accountants, home or office businessman, and even Mostly the IT people and people who download a lot of free stuff from sites like these and who have saved a lot of money thanks to open source software. And they have one thing in mind like, how do I help the person behind the program....And in this way most of the open source projects that are there get funds...
Hope this helps Sonam..........
Adding to what Prasun said, other than the people who gives donations for the open source softwares...government too fund these kind of open source software development programmes as part of the stimulus package and they believe that spending federal money to develop open source programmes could put a complete catalogue of free software into the hands of computer users throughout the world, yielding long-term economic benefits.
Yes even i agree with Prasun's answer and he is right most of the donations happen in the form of people who are visiting those sites for many reasons, i have seen where a movie download site getting funds, and had some pretty good number there, so if people had very good experiences and the site helpful for them, they donate some amount towards the site......
And Sonam all the best for your open source project....
I went through an article, where For many open source enthusiasts, the problem is like finding the funds to help support their favorite open source projects, which include various Linux distros. It's not that they do not have the money, it's the method of forwarding the necessary funds that's the problem.
Well, what if one finds who could donate to open source projects without it costing you a dime? Yes, offered in a partnership with US Bank, you can apply for a real Visa card with a real credit limit set by the bank - this is the real deal. The interesting part is that you, the user of the credit card, have the power to compel the US Bank to donate to a list of open source projects...
