Environmentalists ask us to use Green (Recycled) building Material. But there is doubt in mind regarding durability and logevity of these materials. Can anyone throw some light on this.

Durability will depend on which material is used and how it is designed. For instance if we use fly ash or slag in concrete which are basically waste material from thermal & iron industry then your concrete will; be much more durable than concrete with cement only.
But then it is very important that the concrete is designed properly to incorporate these material. If fly ash or slag is used and curing is not done properly it may cause more harm than good.
Recycled aggregate is another material that can be used in concrete or as replacement for murrum in fillings.
These material will help you save environment but it is important to know how these materials behave. They should not be used without proper knowledge.

hi rajdeep,

I am a great supporter of green architecture and wish to practice the same. As far as my experience goes each recycled or green material comes with it's manual, explaining it's usage, specifications as to the composition of the material, and also tests and certifications as far as the strength and safety of the material is concerned. This is available with the material manufactured by reputed companies. Moreover if it's a green material then it would also mention it's carbon credits (for example Saint Gobain glass).

I hope i have been able to clarify some of your doubts.

Hi Rajdeep,

I think Mr. Kothari has cleared your question. The durability of any material is to be judged by certain tests. If it is uptothe mark, I think there is no harm in using it. Rather it should be useful for the human beings.

Hi Rajdeep,

The there is no specific answer to your question. the recycled material which is available is both of goos as well as bad quality, you need to test the product before purchasing it. If the product you get is of good quality then there are no issues regarding its quality, let it be fresh or recycled material.

I hope that I have cleared some of your doubts.
