Hi Friends and Peers
I will like to understand from this platform and community as to how good it is to opt for a job opportunity in Lagos? How safe it is for Indian Expats working there?
Answer to your question depends on how adventurous you are and how good your company is?
It is about as safe as working in New York or LA or Delhi for that matter. As long as you mind your own business and dont venture out late in the night alone - you will be safe anywhere in the world.
Having said that, check out what your company is offering in terms of accomadation and transportation and then arrive at your decision.
Above keep your mind open and head for it if you want some international experience, dont get bogged down about security issues too much as long as there is a sizeable indian population (which there is ) in the place you are going to work.
I worked in Nigeria for 3 years offshore. I used to pass through Lagos, Port Harcourt to quiet interior of AKWA IBOM State. But, the company fielding me was quiet reputed & taking me care of all security measures. Nigerians are quiet good people, very nice to move with. Communicating to them is easy because ENGLISH is widely spoken. See that your offer is good and guaranteed, & since you have a friend there I do not find any problem .

Hello, I am of Indian origin and looking to set up a business in Lagos Nigeria. At present I am trying to do my homework to see if the business is viable and to find out the costs to set up a company and also the operating licences. The businesses we are looking to set up is either a travel related selling holiday or else we are thinking of setting up an estate agency to sell plots of land in the UK. At present we are currently doing this having emigrated to some 24 years ago. Our main reason to contact is as Lagos in new to ask for your valuable advise on how to proceed as we would like to rent an office somewhere in a shopping mall. Also we hear that getting accommodation is difficult and wanted to ask you for safe areas to live in. Finally your advise will be appreciated.
I have the experinece of staying in Lagos for quite sometime now and I would say that if you are not very adventurous(Late Nights etc ) it is quite a safe place. This is a marked improvement from the state it was few years back. Local transport is bad so negotiate a company car with your prospective employer. There is a sizable Indian community here in Lagos with a temple and Indian Hotel. Abuja, the Cpaital, is still a better city. I would not recommend Port Harcourt or any of the other smaller cities.
Hi Rohit
If alone and outgoing + if your company is good enough, Lagos no problems.
Yes, as said by Jaygopal, no late nights and should try to move out in groups, if in late evenings . (That's what few of my friends over there do)
If thinking of moving there with family, than it's a problem, as family member's freedom is restricted (specially if migrating from a freedom loving country like India) as one has to move out under security and be preferably at home after 7 pm
Goodluck!!
Yes, one may be concerned for "security and safety" in Nigeria ( may not as much as its capital city Lagos).
Quite often news items appear in Media about the ( partial) lawnessness in the country. But, rightly said in other two answers that it depends.
However, as a lay man sitting in a (safe) city in India, I have to add some negative aspects :
1) The country is presently home for lots of "Internet Fraudstars" - how /why .. ?
2) The Central Bank there has no control to "check" Internationl Financial (Internet) Frauds .. how/why?
