A friend of mine asked me this question, can you help me answer him?
Q. How safe do you think a job in HR would be? I'm thinking of going from sales (too much stress in these times) into HR as a generalist. I do have a recruitment background. Do you think HR would be a good move to have a career in?
Absolutely Yes.
But in case if your friend thinks, HR would be better considering in terms of stress than sales, obviously he is mistaken. :-)
I do agree the HR jobs are the most stressful jobs. At the earlier stage youwill be facing so much stress that you shall think of quiting it and go for marketing or so.
I just want to remind you guys out there, HR jobs are favorable for those who come from marketing / HR background with good communication skills and people skills. If you good at managing people you are fit for it.
HR jobs are safe ? This one I have to figure it out.
For those from finance background, if you are opting for a job in finance better do MBA from a well known institute because getting core finance job is difficult, the bank that does so called finance job doesnt not do finance work, its the software which does all kinds of finance work.
And I agree with Mr.Sunil that " Meeting people' in Sales is much diifrent to' Understading people'in HR."
You can choose this if you are a 'people person'. Todat most people join HR probabaly thinking its a haloed position, safef rom the choppin block in these times (think again) . I have come across a lot of HR personnel who simply didint have the one basic requirment besides an eye for deatail & diligence " EMPATHY". Meeting people' in Sales is much diifrent to' Understading people'in HR. Ask your friend if all this is his cuppa tea.

Whoever told you that! In the little circle of people that I know, I can count at least 5 people, who have opted for HR over marketing/finance/operations. And mind you, all the colleges that called them were sterling institutes. But, if you are clear in your mind that HR is your calling, go for it, then!
HR has vast scope, and is broadly divided into:
1) Recruitment - includes strategic planning, forecasting, hiring, and selection
2) Learning and Development - training, learning management and administration, career enhancement
3) Performance Evaluation - appraisals and promotions
4) Industrial Relations - mainly for blue-collared jobs
5) Consulting

Both will continue to co-exist. Mobile phones and tablets with their small screen size and inferior input methods and not yet poised to replace PCs and laptop computers. |
