Green buildings should always be environment friendly. Energy saving green measures should be implemented for existing buildings. There should be some construction changes in the building design so that less energy consumption and more usage can be done with it. Something like, design to hold rain water and able to maintain them. Also, energy conservation bulbs will be able to save lot of power.Older buildings do not always have the space to accommodate today’s sophisticated technological systems needed to obtain the energy savings criteria under the LEED rating system. To resolve such challenges, LEED certifications are achieved by earning credits in various areas such as recycling and building materials that reduce energy usage. Since in some cases, it is not always economically feasible to earn credits when renovating major building components, credits are therefore earned in other ways. This can be obtained through modifying existing practices such as modifying waste management or improving energy consumption. Retrofitting wash basins for example: will reduce the flow rate of 0.5 US gpm which is a reduction of 80% over the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). More and more recycled materials should be used in construction of the building....

I agree with Pragya.

Focus on retrofitting all M.E.P., roof & envelope should result in great savings on Electricity & Water and overall O&M expenses.

While one can wait for I.G.B.C. to introduce its Green Building System for Existing Buildings, one can also seriously consider implementing LEED India Rating System to achieve the above.

If The building is really very old ,I mean 25 years or more ,a look into the electric wiring is essential.Rewiring with new ones will save a lot of unnecessary energy loss and costs .Also Old electrical appliances with new energy saving ones.

Modifying  and furnishing building with Plastic and formaldehyde based materials will not be green and certainly not good for health.
