Hi, Shiv. I would like give some advice on what I know about the SSB exam.

The Interview is intended to judge the mental caliber, attitude and outlook of the candidate along with his leadership qualities and character traits. Thus, it would be an assessment not merely of his Academic proficiency and intellectual qualities but also of his social traits and interest in current events.  Some of the qualities to be judged can be listed as,

  • Mental alertness
  • Critical powers of assimilation
  • Balance of judgment
  • Clear and logical exposition
  • Variety and depth of interests
  • Ability for social cohesion and leadership
  • Intellectual and moral integrity.

The Aim of the SSB Interviews:

The IO (Interviewing Officer), at the SSB, tries to assess the leadership of Officer like qualities of the candidate by means of the direct or purposive conversation during the interview. He also tries to evaluate the training potentialities of the candidate.  The questions at the interview will be so directed as the candidate may automatically emit enough light on his leadership ability in his answers.

Two important Factors of the Interview which play a decisive role are the candidate's Knowledge and his power of Expression. He should be able to speak fluently and express him-self clearly, will score high marks. While answering the candidate should take the lead and cover as much as possible.  In other words, simply saying "YES" or "NO" to a question will not suffice. The candidate should explain convincingly why he agrees or disagrees to a given proposition. He must logically and forcefully substantiate his views with valid arguments.

At the SSB Interview they lay much emphasis on qualities or leadership and not merely on academic or textual knowledge.  The candidate should therefore, know what the various qualities of leadership are, and how they could be highlighted by him during the interview.

Leadership Qualities: The board takes note of the following qualities, when it tries to assess the leadership ability of the candidate, as the same have been generally accepted as leadership attributes:

Intellectual Attainments: The extent of knowledge in different subjects. The depth of knowledge - How deeply the candidate has studied a subject of his choice of interest? Practical Knowledge How the candidate has applied his theoretical knowledge in practical situations or how best he can solve problems. To find out this questions put forth (Example) may be:-

  • What will you do, when you find after boarding the bus that you had forgotten to bring the money purse with you? How will you organize a Picnic?
  • What will you do if you were not selected at this interview?
  • General Knowledge - Current Affairs, Everyday Science, Burning Topics, Sports, Newspaper headlines, etc. Grasp - How quickly the candidate understands the question or the subject?

Power of Expression:

  • Fluency - No stammering, gape, etc,
  • Forceful - Lively, enthusiastic and arresting. No monotonous or dragging voice. Not speaking very fast. No affectations.
  • Logic in argument- Rational, clearheaded, analytical, systematic, proceeding step buy step and no contradictions.
  • Practical approach- Realistic and sensible, use of commonsense, alive to facts and existing limitations.
  • Convincing Ability - Speaking with sincerity and faith.

Personal Traits:

  • Cheerful, pleasant and smiling disposition.
  • Liveliness - Eager, alert, inspired by urge, fired with ambition.
  • Enthusiasm, keenness and interest.
  • Dress and Turnout - Smart, clean and suited to the occasion.
  • Poise - Graceful movements. Confident approach, straight walk
  • Punctuality.

Finally don't lose hope. This time take your time & prepare as if tis is your last chance.

Give your best & best of luck...

Dear All

There is no way that one can COACH to crack SSB selections. The Defence Services look for average officers. Now who is an Average Officer? An individual who has the Basic Intelligence, Can plan and Organise himself with his available resources and is able to communicate to be understood by others. He should be a ready mixer, take responsibilities and feel for others(unselfish). He should be able to decide quickly on routine matters and be able to convince others of his ideas easily . he should not get perturbed at routine failures and remain cheerful. He should be enduring and result oriented and in doing so, be capable of long hours if required.

Aren't most of us like what I have mentioned above??We are. Then why do so many face disqualification? It is because they try hard what has been coached at coaching Academies, lay more emphasis on dress, attire mannerism, vocabulary etc.etc.They loose focus on projecting who they are and project a confused personality to the expert assessors at the SSB who are specifically selected by the Defense Institute of Psychological Research, based on their aptitude to judge the persona projected by the candidates.

My advise is be your Natural self. Dont forget that to become a commissioned officer or Class I gazetted officer you should be lacking in your general awareness of what is happening around the world and in your country. Compare yourself with your friend who is preparing for civil services exam or for IIT JEE exam.

For more tips and Guidance you may contact me. Best wishes.

hi sanjeeb,

with all due respect, and i do mean it,what on earth are you guys trying to do? i mean, the poor chap asked 'how', and you gave a big marketing presentation? where is the nobility my friend?where is the zeal to actually help? you know what,i cleared my ssb not once, but twice, but both times i got washed away in the final interview round......why?because i dont have enough courage?or am i not patriot enough?or dont i have leadership skills? i tried to answer these questions but i couldnt find any as the army is so so so secretive that it dosnt even want the candidate to know where is his fault,so i went mad and went everywhere seeking these answers and someone like you, reccommended me some other academy, and i got into it,but what was the outcome? nothing......so does it mean i dont have it in me? HELL NO!!! I DO HAVE IT IN ME..........its just that i havn't realized it........so i took my time off and swore before the last ssb board,(i.e 21st ssb bhopal),that i will be back and i will take whats mine.

so mr. singh,my suggestion is not these that these academys are bad or hoax,i do not doudt the ingenunity of mr. sanjeeb or the respected aforesaid academy. certainly, the person who runs it was an ex army officer and i think that his only intention is to help. but, all i am saying is,that army is not a job,it is a proffesion, where you not only serve it,but also protect it. it is certainly demanding, but all it demands from you is to be matured, confident, logical and rational; and ofcource i do not doudt your patriotism or courage or any of the officer like qualities needed to make a mark.........my advice is,start leading out, planning out stuffs, organize things, buy a rs agarwal book of logical reasoning and practice it,it will make you sharp, give you an eagle's eye and you would do great in gto tasks........by the way,my name is debalik ganguly,i am from west bengal and currently i am persuing mba(marketing) and i still have that fire in my belly......you can also contact me on 09733712911,i would be glad to help you out
