As more and more transaction happening using credit card and on the web what steps one should take to make sure he does not become victim of the fraud ?
There are many dos and donts for making epayment secure. Every country has its own rules. In India, this is controlled by Reserve Bank of India. Some of the rules are:
1. The payment server should be in a secure zone.
2. The payment process should be through https and http.
3. The full message from the client to the server and back should be encrypted.
4. Two factor authentication is suggested (not yet mandatory). Two factor authentication means getting a password plus a question, password plus sms, password plus access card, etc., etc.
5. Instead of asking the customer to type in the password, he can be asked to use virtual keyboard (where the position of the letters are jumbled).
A person should opt fro epayment only if the provider has all the above features. Plus some more:
1. He should not divulge his password to anybody.
2. He should not use the same password across all sites.
3. He should have a hard-to-guess password
4. He should not write the password down in a piece of paper, etc.
5. He should be aware of phising sites and avoid them.
