In present scenario some of regular customers to a stores can also be involved in theft as they are very well aware of store security systems and their loop holes. So the moment you come across any regular customer to the store dont think they cant be a shop lifter. If a sales staff is always there on a the customers head there will be less chances of shrinkage.

Secondly a college or school going students has also been caught doing shop lifting which is out of adventure they do.Again dont think in terms of customer.....whether they buy or not they can cause harm to the store.

Professional shop lifter just need a second to do this job.Sometime they are equipped to break security tags.So your staffing should be such that at any given point of time you should have adequate manpower on floor to monitor things.

The idea behind presenting the whole situation is the moment store get crowded suggest staff to leave everything and keep a eye on everyone in the store.Normally at this kind of situation staff trys to look busy as they feel they wont be able to cater many customers at one time and they start setting up the store rather than being vigilant.

After a weekend check the inventory and find out did actually some short lifting has happend as weekends are high traffic days and shortages happen more on weekends. This practice will make staff understand that they are responsible for the store whether they get penalised for it or not and they will understand how crucial is the store operations are.

Shrinkage the main problem in todays retail world is not only the vested resposibility of one individual as said by Sarin. Its the employer employee relation and as well the training imparted to the down line of gaining the ownership. Its a simple question in how many retail stores the employees heve been given incentives for shrinkage control? To wht extent the replenishment of stock is done according to the store indent? Piling up of stocks making the store a small warehouse again results in shrinkage.

MAIN WE CAN DO THE HIGH VALUE PRODUCTS DAILY COUNTING IS MUST, SO EVERY DAY THE STAFF SHOULD BE COUNT THE HIGH VALUE PRODUCTS, AND WE BRIEF TO STAFF ANY ITEM WILL MISS PLACE THAT COUNTER PERSON SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE IN THE SECTION.  AND INBOUND AND OUT BOUND PROPERLY CHECK THE COUNTERS. IN STORES WE MUSTLY KEEP THE CAMERAS IN ALL FLOORS, SECURITY MUST TO TIGHT. ONCE WE MONITOR EVERYDAY.

Good comments by Ravindra.  Everyone is talking about shoplifting and customer stealing but what about internal staff ?  They are the one who knows how to get the stuff out without being noticed.

Shrinkage in India is very high as reported by Ravindra.  2.89% WOW!  It should not be more than 1% as per international market.  Shrinkage not only come from internal and external stealing but also due to poor negligence of the front end executive staff and store manager, product going out of date, excessive inventory, poor display in the store, etc.  The most important thing to control shrinkage is better eyes and good training to everyone, specially to the store manager as they are responsible for it.  Also it is due to dullness and weak customer services by the front end executive who most of the time are involved in their own world.

I have seen and worked in international market for long time and I don't think that putting someone in jail is the right solution.  Only thing is take the money from the staff or customer for the stuff he/she is stealing, call their parents/gardian and kiss their ass out of the store.  Make sure they don't come back.  It is ok to loose a thief customer; as retail is only recognise by the service you give to the customer/soceity.  Only aim should not be sales but also customer retention.  If you have good and happy customer, your business will never go down.

Good Luck.

Well my concern on the two points is that they are making th employees look after that and if these employees do this the store people say that they are not caterin to the customers. So this is a catch 22 situation for the employees. What should they do?

Periodic high value count, Stock audit & check point devices etc are efficient sytems etc developed based on identifying tags (Hard/Soft tags etc). But as the shoppers to are becoming professional shoplifters with ageing times more needs to be done that traditional set ways stated above.

India accounts for 2.89% shrinkage presently and 80-90% shrinkage is due to internal staff. Hence the best practice would be the reward sytem to secret service for thieft or theft support person identification  among team members in store may be cash or in appaisals in form of promotions etc.

Strict punishment for staff being cought in indulgance as termination of job contact or suspension can be the right perogative as for the customer point of view punishment  measures have to follow a legal route for various laws according to Indian penal code
