How can we utilise waste land, where rainfall is less and food crops can not be grown?

In my view we can use the wasteland to create water bodies such as resorvoirs, ponds so that the land surrounding it can be irrigated.

Creation of planned habitats free from pollution, facilities such as water, sanitation, green surroundings,  hospitals, eductional institutions, and others.

Afforestation , whereever there are barren lands , by providing checkdams for water storing and ground water recharging.

Putting up industries.

Affordable housing.

We can use the wasteland in the above forms as they meet my mind. As an initiator of this topic I request u to come out with more ideas which can help solve the Roti, Kapade, Makaan, and sustainable pollutant free Green earth, Any new ideas?

Out of the total land area of India, measuring 329 million ha. (mha), 150 m ha. is uncultivated and 90 mha. is categorized as wasteland. The broad subdivision of the wasteland 1S categorized as saline and alkaline, wind and water eroded land forming considerable part of wasteland.

Out of 304 million hectares of land in India for which records are available, roughly 40 million hectares are considered unfit for vegetation as they are either in urban areas, occupied by roads and rivers, or under permanent snow, rock or desert.

Of the remaining 264 million hectares of land that have some potential for vegetation, 142 million hectares are cultivated, 67 million hectares are classified as forestland, and 55 million hectares as fallow or wasteland, or land with pastures or groves.

In percentage terms, according to World Bank estimates:

  • Cultivable land amounts to around 58% of land that has potential for vegetation.
  • 22% is forestland.
  • 7% is uncultivated (revenue) ‘wasteland’.
  • 7% is rocky, barren land.
  • 7% is urban/non-agricultural land.

The rights of such waste land can be given to the agricultural poor and weaker section people as per the Central Govt. sponsored programme  duly extending support to make the land tillable.  But, the state Govts. concerned are making mockery of the programme.  SEZs can be established in these waste land instead of displacing the farmers from their cultivable lands.  Identifying such land is the first and foremost task for the local revenue authorities.  If it is a low lying area, the land can be developed as water body. Utilisations are many, but the point how ur going to utilise is more important.

At present around 80% of the land present in earth's surface is suitable for crop cultivation, but are in use to flourish urban civilization. Approximately, 15% of the total land on earth surface is been laid waste due to poor land management practices. This wasteland can be used to grow crops by employing a technology known as vertical farming.

The concept of vertical farming was developed by Dickson D. Despommier, president of Vertical Farm Technologies LLC, USA, along with the help of 94 graduate students of Columbia University.

Vertical farming is a type of agricultural technique that make use of large-scale agricultural area of urban "farm-scrapers". Using recycled resources and greenhouse methods such as hydroponics, these buildings would produce fruit, vegetables, edible mushrooms and algae year-round.

Land which is unsuitable for arable farming usually has at least one of the following deficiencies: no source of fresh water; too hot (desert); too cold (Arctic); too rocky; too mountainous; too salty; too rainy; too snowy; too polluted; or too nutrient poor. Clouds may block the sunlight plants need for photosynthesis, reducing productivity. Plants can starve without light. Starvation and nomadism often exists on marginally arable land. Non-arable land is sometimes called wasteland, badlands, worthless or no man's land.

Non-arable land can sometimes be converted into arable land. New arable land makes more food, and can reduce starvation. This outcome also makes a country more self sufficient and politically independent, because food importation is reduced. Making non-arable land arable often involves digging new irrigation canals and new wells, aqueducts, desalination plants, planting trees for shade in the desert, hydroponics, fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer, pesticides, reverse osmosis water processors, PET film insulation or other insulation against heat and cold, digging ditches and hills for protection against the wind, and greenhouses with internal light and heat for protection against the cold outside and to provide light in cloudy areas. This process is often extremely expensive.

The fact that the land is called 'wasteland' means no cultivation can be done. Hence industrialisation in the wasteland is the only solution. Industries should be shifted from fertile land to wasteland and the fertile land used for cultivation

Excellent topic friends!!!

"Wasteland" the term itself projects as coined by those who have excess and can not value. The word is as much alien as its use by a government which has failed to become Indian.

Leaders and planners of India, where deaths due to hunger are not much of a news anymore must hang its head in shame for any wastage whatsoever and wherever.

That these hitherto unused parts of motherland can be brought to good use is without any doubt.  The missing factor is Will and Intent of the Government and its citizens failing to attach the necessary sense of belonging. The uses are endless and possibilities may never cease it is the requisite WILL that is necessary. Abilities is as well be available to acquire yet the WILL can not.... without a responsible behavior.

To believe we belong to this country and its resources ought be cared first and foremost should be in forefront of all especially planners rather than unending self-servicing which is norm of the day.
