Size estimation is NOT the first step. We must analyze 'what are the processing requirements' and 'who are the users and their role in this project' as first step.

As an answer to the question 'how tracking size attributes to monitor' -I would say - monitoring is to keep an eye on deviations form the estimated resource consumption and take corrective actions as pre-formulated in the risk management section of the project document.

For any projects, size estimation is the first step to be performed to determine the magnitude of the project.

There are various estimation models  industry wide accepted that could be used

1. LOC (Lines of Code) 2. FP (Function Points) 3. UCP (Usecase Points ) in case of J2EE based projects 4. Story Points in case of AGILE SDLC Methodologies

The  baseline size could be tracked and monitored to determine the variation in it as the project progresses through the life cycle from Initiation through closing. For example, Baseline FP Count ie, Development FP Count is arrived at while initial size and for any changes that are brought in the scope  (Scope Increase ) as the project progresses Enhancement FP needs to be determined.

It has to be noted the various metrics depend upon the project size example

1. Project Complexity ( Small, Medium, Large, XL, XXL and so on) - Refer Relative Scaling of Projects

2. Defect Density  - No. of defects/Size of teh project (in fp/ucp/loc) and the Product Quality that could be forecasted from the phase wise defect density

3. Requirements Volatility/Stability Index

In addition to Puneet the size of multiproject provide a view into the amount of work to be performed in a project. In the beginning, a size estimate can be used as input into effort and schedule calculations. As the project progresses, size can be monitored and scope changes can be rapidly detected.

Tracking project size attributes provides an early warning system for problems with project progress, project growth and stability.Size data can be used to validate the likely completion date of projects and to provide the team and management with a visual picture of the project’s magnitude.
