Windows software (NetMeeting, MSN webcam, ICQ web-cam) often uses a DirectShow Overlay for faster, smoother playback of the movie. A video overlay is invisible to many Windows capture programs like SnagIt, because it is handled by a special video hardware. Such screen capture software will then record only a solid color rectangle (usually black, pink or blue, the so called "overlay key color").
But all is not lost, the overlay use for playback may be sometimes turned off, at least temporarily for recording. Here is how to do this:
- Select "Display" from "Control Panel", open "Display Properties" dialog.
- Click "Settings" tab, and then click "Advanced" button.
- Click "Troubleshooting" tab.
- Disable all accelerations by dragging the "Hardware acceleration" option to the left (Move the slider control for hardware acceleration to None).
- Click "OK" button.
