Ideally the civil engineer should start with field job of site Engineer in contracting company for the first five years.

He equips with methodologies by field exposure.

For the next two years he should be in quantity surveyor.

He can be good with numbers(rates and billing).

Five more years he can spend in managing the projects in contracting company with the experiences he gained as Site Engineer and Quantity surveyor.

He is now more refined with his time tested technical knowledge and resources management gained as project manager.

He can be on client side where use of the coordination skils and contract management gets strain hardened.

The consultant's job is the final stage of the civil engineer which needs maturity in all above desciplenes. He can use all of his skills and benifit the engineer community.

Civil engineering one of the oldest engineering subject, since then it had lost the attention of the recent developments. So., i feel we cant do anything with what we have learnt. it requires the hand's on experience on what is happening at site. Hence forth we can develope the career in project Management, Consultant or Execution heads.

It requires the field knowledge. Its must.

First is to work as a consultant site engineer . Since the size of projects are increased nowadays due to high investment cost, it may not be possible for a fresher to stand at site for more than 2 yrs presently i guess.

As a consultant engineer you get to know the tricks played by the contractor and how the clients are in making decisions at any critical stage of project.

Then you can work for contractors side to know the estimating , profits made by contractors.

Finally calmly and cooly get into as a client and bang both which is what every client is doing nowadays.

Civil Engineers are responsible for creating structures which are in public domain and have to be safe, functional and aesthetic. There is a common perception that the quality in construction workmanship has come down although the technology and materials have improved tremendously. It is therefore essential the civil engineers get a good grounding in construction execution. They can be good in design, qty surveying, planning etc subsequently with the basic training in construction.

Nitin Nitin... come out of the planning room. The building is not made merely by planning fault finding, estimation and legal dealings. Ultimately one has to stand there and actually got to pour the concrete...and he is a civil engineer.

After Mr Mallaya's beutiful description there is nothing to say.
