In India, still online marketing is picking up. But with a high speed. Once internet is available in every corner and people understand its importance, we can see its actual productivity everywhere.

In India, Banks and Credit cards are doing their (part of ) business online.
Each day more and more companies are launching their on-line wings and some are exclusive on-line. This is an indicator.
Infrastructure : Not ready to the heighst level.
Trust : This may take some time to grow.
Internet penetration : Ours is a vast population. If 7 % of population has internet in their SOHO ( office accesses are ignored ), that is not small.

Pravin, please make the question more clear so that you will receive the correct answer. It is true we have seen that many of the online companies are one time investment. Online selling were not massive hit as like direct sales. People were not satisfied with online purchasing because it was intangible. So I don't think online marketing is effective compares to media. But one day it will and will take some time.
Services like banking have certainly picked up so far as online contact with customers are concerned. But other areas and sectors seem to be still in an experimental stage. The Indian customers are generally considered to be discerning and mature consumers not easily lured by tall promises and glitzy advertising. Therefore, investments by companies in sectors other than banking in creating an online infrastructure may not be paying at this time.
Online marketing and research takes a vital role these days. As per Mr. Rohit said, its picking up with a high growth when compare some other developing countries. But at the same time the proxy and the proper information is also lacking here. If the online marketing and the strategies are regulated by any body or governance. Then its really helpful to increse the brand awareness.
