Yes, when you think you think in the language you are first accoustomed to when you were born. It is irrespective of the fact that it is your mother tongue or not. Similarly when one is thinking, you need your thoughts to relate to something and the language helps to overcome this. Thought itself is language based, otherwise how can be relate to it. We cannot obviously think in japanese or german if you don't know these languages. So language is must for the thought process to take place for the simple reason that you cannot think in gestures.

Hiren, a nice Question, but a complex one. Thought is a mental process that keeps on going in the mind unabated. A thought is a piece of reasoning produced by thinking. At times, the word refers to a way of thinking that is characteristic to a particular class of people or society as in the expression, the “Eastern Thought” or “Western Thought”. However, we should be able to think without language. How do we imagine that any animal thinks that is not capable of language? Babies are born with photographic memories until they learn language. They soak up input like a sponge; while all sensory information is useful to them, sight is predominantly the most useful tool for learning, and concepts are understood visually until the capacity for language starts to form. Spatial conceptualization does not require language, though antecedently rationalizing and understanding what you've conceptualized actually does.
Thoughts dont require language. Its idea and thinking of mind, the creation of mind. Hence i would like to say that language is not necessary for thoughts. But for proper procedure so the idea or thoughts should be completed perfeectly the language is necessary. And as my friend said Language is necessary to explain things in perfect way.
