In India we have always felt that a white shirt / dark shade trouser with a tie indicates a sales person.
Is it a necessary one. If occasion based business dressing exists, please guide me on the same. Like Business meeting, evening business meet over a cocktail, get to gether for golf or even interviews.
I dont think there is a necessity for dress code .
This is another old western costume fancy dress we still keep using. In the west in early times the dressing was based on status of person as accepted by society.Wigs wearing was part of this status.Judges, lawyers etc wore particular types.
I feel what is necessary is good dressing ,suitable to the particular climate and tradition of the region. We don’t have to shy away from our traditional dressing for the sake of work in India. If we don’t wear it in India who will.?
Our dresses are designed to suit our tropical climate.wheras ties and other paraphernalia is for colder climatic regions to keep oneself warm and alive for business.
Same goes for evening,golf etc
I remember during 70’s ,you cannot imagine adult wearing Shorts(you may call it Bermudas,3/4ths anything) people would laugh let alone call you something else.you would have been termed as silly village rustic.
Now you can see weekend dressing transformed into Bermudas etc,and it is acknowledged as the IN THING in dressing.
All these point out that we are just aping another region’s Fitouts without a thought whether it fits us here or not.
All you need is civilized dressing and Brains to either convince or confuse your customer and achieve in your business ethically.
I believe proper dressing makes a sales person more professional and respectful. First impression in reaching customers will have great impact!! When dressed formally customers at-least will listen what we are trying to explain when compared to normally dressed sales people. So bottom line is "Formal dress code places major role in any business meetings".
i think dress up is not a necessity for a sales person in the present scenario.A customer or client is being impressed by the manner in which the presentation of the product is made by the salesman, rather than the dress upof the salesman. A salesman need to be good looking clothes only rather than to be in a proper (militery type)dress code.
we all have our own views for that, bt in the today scenario most of the sales persons don't like to wear the old dress ups...
When u meet with the clients u looks good and its also depends upon the clients whom u meet maybe ur client funky chunky type and call u on pool side and when u meet with wearing barmuda and t-shirt he likes..
When you meet with a potential client or customer for the first time, your appearance is important. This is human nature, and one reason why your clothes are important. If you're sales professional, you might need to carry a laptop, nice working pen & look more like a "professional" on the job. Presenters must be especially cognizant of such shifts in sensibility because, like it or not, what you wear sends a message all its own.

Is there a dress code for a sales person |
I totally agree with Aditya. While selling the product or service is the only fixed factor. The rest are all variable factors that influence a sale. Thus every discussion in sales teaches the sales person something new. If a sales person feels... |
