Workforce planning and strategic planning are two important policies an organization needs. Is there a link between workforce planning and strategic planning? How.
Dear Darshana,
To me, while strategic planning is a macro level activity with reference to the organization as a whole, although not virtually a micro level activity, but workforce planning is a micro level planning part of the strategic planning.
In other words, strategic planning can be termed as a brain of the organization, while workforce planning is providing arms & hands and legs & feet to help implementing that what has been charted out through strategic planning.

Dear Darshana,
I think competence and efficient workforce is the prime prerequisite for an organisation for any kind of activity. Workforce planning starts with stategic planning itself. rather, I would say sometime before also because competend and skillful staff always gives top management confidence while searching new avenues and facing challenges in this highly competitive corporate world.
It a very important issue for present bussiness environment in Indian context. Now organisations should look to plan more agressively for recruiting proper talent for proper job and more important retaining it.I congratulate you for raising this issue.
Thanks
The linkage between the workforce planning and strategic planning is like brain to the head and strength to the body.
Strategic planning happens at an organisational level on turnover, profits, market segmentations, channel distribution, procurement, competition in mind for advertising and publicity, process development, infrastructure etc. [sales, admn, networks, it, ites depts].
As workforce planning involves abundance of support to the manpower. It involves a series of seasonal, periodical, timely activities to do with Planning, Providing and Protecting the manpower and its resources (i.e., recruitment to retentional strategies, policies & promotions) [Hr, Service, FoS depts]

Yes, there is clearly a link between these two planning efforts. As part of the organization's initiative, administrative departments are in the process of developing strategic plans. Inherent to this effort is the need to consider the human resource implications of your strategic thinking and planning. With any strategic plan or objective, there is typically a human resource component that merits consideration. Departments are likely to achieve the most meaningful results from their planning efforts when there is alignment between their strategic and workforce plans.
