There are no reliable statistics on what percentages of voters go for party centered voting or candidate centered voting, but I think it is reasonable to assume that it changes from time to time, depending on the candidates standing for election.
I agree with the statement that, a party ideology should be taken into consideration, rather than traits of individual candidate. Because, it is party, who is going to run the Government.
I will like to add some more points.
-One should not go alone by Party manifesto. It's relevence is only till election. One should go by party's track record, maturity of leaders within party, their views on matters of nation importance like terrorism, maintaining secular atmosphere, development issues, their strategy to overcome recession.
-One should also the party's capability to form stable Govrnment.
-in today's situation, the small regional parties are hindrances while thinking on national level. They have a narrow view, favouring their state only. They do not have a wide vision to take entire nation with them. They have to attach with a major party, to form a Front. Then they spend 5 years to garner maximum gains for their state, by exploiting each and every issue. Unfortunately, this has become norm of the day. Each Goverment spends all the time & energy only in fight for survival.
