There have been several discussions and debates on this enigmatic and perplexing query pertaining to what it takes to succeed in getting an appropriate job for an employment seeker or getting a business contract signed on by an entrepreneur.
The opinions and perceptions often vary based on various experiences and inferences.
Some of the crucial critical success factors in getting a job or business contract that are often delved upon include luck, talent, attitude, nature, social upbringing, persistent hard work, level of self esteem and confidence, personal or business contacts, domain expertise, personality, technical skills, knowledge, qualification and academic records, versatility, communication skills, registering in job or business community portals, participating in social or business networking sites etc., etc.
According to you, what is the most crucial critical success factor in getting a job or business contract? If you wish, you can rate the critical success factors according to their importance. Also, you may ponder upon variation in importance of these factors in various stages of professional or business careers.
Extending this, are these success factors same or vary in case one takes into consideration of retaining jobs, getting promotion in job, rising on career front and stepping up on professional ladder, promoting or expanding businesses etc, etc.
Getting a business contract depends all upon one's ingenuity to understand the requirement and how one offers the services comparing others.
As a person who has been on several interview panel and evaluation committees,I would say that sometimes competition is high but a decision has to be made. In so doing, some the above mentioned crucial critical factors are applied depending on the position or the nature of the work. Sometimes one single factor can make the difference and that is attitude.
I will give a live example. Recently I was on a committee to select an external audit firm to audit international funding for some programs. A particular audit firm who had the best experience for the work was ranked low simply because of poor presentation which include their noncompliance of the rules and regulations. It was a clear case of them being overconfident and paid no proper attention to what they were submitting. No amount of luck or personality can help them here.
Some of the crucial key success factors are -
1. Attitude
2. Competency
3. Skills and knowledge
4. Abilities (self confidence, maturity, empathy, etc.)
5. Networking
6. A modicum of luck
The intensity of the factors may vary for different and specific requirements. However, at the overall level, the factors remain the same......
Self confidence and smartness are the most crucial factors over and above all other factors, as even if you are the most qualified or even most experienced, you have to represent yourself smartly and confidently, otherwise you would not be able to sell yourself. If you are not able to sell yourself you can not be considered to be able to sell organization's ideas well.
