In consolidation of stone ballast for the construction of roads,filler material is used , of different type ,it is taken care of that P.I. should not be more than 7 and not less than 3.
May I ask to the very competent authorities of TOO STEP why it is so?
PI is an index property, i.e. it gives an indication of plastic behaviour of the soil and especially fine contents (passing 75 micron) which may mean high clay content. Thus if PI is high (a) Water holding capacity of the aggregate mix will increase (due to high surface area and/or clay). It may also mean that the filler is swelling in nature. Due to all or any of these the mix may not get properly compacted and may exhibit bumping action. (b) the drainage property of the mix will be poor.
But these effects will be prominent during compaction and not during consolidation. Normally the built up grounds are compacted and not left for consolidation.
