Microsoft has announced the worldwide availability of its new Windows 7 operating system. A basic home version of Windows 7, available only in emerging countries such as India, Windows 7 Home Basic is priced at Rs 5,899 excluding taxes. Windows 7 Home Premium is Rs 6799, Windows 7 Professional is Rs 11199 and Windows 7 Ultimate is Rs 11799.

If you are upgrading from Windows Vista, the price will be lesser than the Full Retail version. For example, Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade costs approximately 4,500 Indian Rupees, while the Full Retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium edition costs you Rs 6,799.

What do you think about the cost of Windows 7? Is it costlier? Will you purchase Windows 7?

Share your thoughts and opinion guys..

The price is very high for Windows 7.  I have read several reviews that 7 is just a modification of its predecessor Vista and the difference is its much faster than Vista.

I think it is not the time for people to go for Windows 7 because some of the operating systems such as Linux with several distributors in the market is available for free although the Windows Version has better user interface.

For computer professionals, they go for Open Source Operating Systems while the naive users go for Windows 7.

I think Microsoft has kept the price tag on a higherside so that they can give a good discount on corporate deals, kind of a market strategy you know.

It's not a what-if scenario. Windows 7, set to arrive on new PCs and as a shrinkwrapped upgrade on October 22, has a minimalist feel and attempts to fix annoyances old and new. In contrast, Windows Vista offered a flashy new interface, but its poor performance, compatibility gotchas, and lack of compelling features made some folks regret upgrading and others refuse to leave Windows XP.

Windows 7 is hardly flawless. Some features feel unfinished; others won't realize their potential without heavy lifting by third parties. And some long-standing annoyances remain intact. But overall, the final shipping version we test-drove appears to be the worthy successor to Windows XP that Vista never was.

Microsoft should consider an acceptable price band of Rs.2000 in the Indian market, for which they can expect atleast 60 to 80% or retail users will start using genuine operating systems.

The present pricing is exorbitant.

7 is definitely more appealing (visually). I have been using RC for 4 months now and like the way it has worked so far. But, price is a little too much, unless it includes third party softwares. I am swithing to XP when my key expires. Afterall, I will still be able to all my things without 7.

Windows 7 is far more better than Vista and is fortunately running pretty cool on my Laptop without any troubles. Actually Vista is already popular for its troubles and many had shifted back to XP. So price and quality will be compared more with XP than with Vista. Where cost is concerned, these prices are almost same in all the countries including India

Seems pretty expensive for an operating system.  But I guess the cost is justified by the features and efforts that have been put into making of the software.
