Soil Mechanics is not more than 100 years old, when the two stalwarts- Terjaghi and Ralf Peck first proved that soil is also an engineering material and behaves accordingly, although somewhat differently.
Nobody now questions its importance, but the issue is how much an enterprenure should spend on the investigation.
My own experience is, petty businessman(investor, enterprenure) does not give importance on the same, shows some reports of site kilometres away saying soil is similar, soil is good, etc.etc.
Without blaming them , I do feel people should think how much an enterprenure should spend on the site investigation.Is there any empirical formula?
Thanks,
-Dipak Bhattacharya/ Delhi
==================================================================
Mr Dipak,Soil is an engineering material for its properties.This is the only material of varying use.
So far as empirical formula is concerned,it may have not been developed for reasons that soil types are the product of environmental forces acting on parent material.That is why its different properties are confirmed in soil testing laboratories.
