Happy Sales
When I was in the hospitality industry, I had the opportunity to serve with on of the best known chain hotels of the world, Starwood group!! The hotel I was in is a boutique hotel and is situated in a not so posh locality. We had the advantage of being chic, five star deluxe and we had crew staying with us. There needed a change to get the revpar up!! Fortunately we had no particular strategy going and the crew business is very cheap business. It keps the hotel rooms occupied with very little rev gen for the hotel services.
I suggested a ROTD, Rate of The day to be started and we just stuck to it like glue. We had decided to offer rooms that were available only for the rate that we had fixed to be sold at for that day. It was extremely difficult initially, but it helped in positioning the hotel as one with a very good attitude. It was not take it or leave it, but it said yes we are available and we are five star deluxe and we are available for the particular rate!! It worked and it worked wonders. We bot only grossed better room rev but we did a jump of nearly 8% on the revpar!! That was a good achievement for us!! :))
I have never gone for sales except my SIP (Summer Internship Project) during MBA Pragramme. It was great experience of sales of Insurance. I joined MAX NEW YORK LIFE & was given task to sell life insurance products. Sales is only field where people earn what they expect. It was tremendous experience with MNYL. As per my experience everybody should be in sales field once in their life to know real relations of their relatives, friends etc. As far as sales field is concerned everybody comes to know their true relations with their relatives. It is tough to be in sales as it requires sharp skills & knowledge regarding products & markets. I was given task of 18 policies within two months but I stroke 20 policies & qualified for NYLI (New York Life) Award.
Sometimes selling involves understanding the marketplace and how to best approach it. I did a turnaround at a biotech firm. The had good products, but they had had no luck broaching the industrial & defense markets. When I took over, I started a retail campaign that was successful. The name-recognition earned then enabled us to penetrate the commercial & defense markets. Sometimes you've just got to tweak your strategy to get to your end-goal.
