It is obvious that the majority of members on TOOSTEP are Indians. My first impression was that it was an Indian Social Website until I was told that was not so and it was a global website. However, I notice from time to time a few members have been posting articles, etc in Hindi/Indian languages. This means that members who don't know those languages will not be able to participate. As much as I know other languages I will not dare make any post in those languages other than english which is accepted globally.

My question therefore " Should a global language be used for sharing knowledge on TOOSTEP?"

Sujit, I think it will be a good idea if you work out a method to make Hindi a global language for Toostep.

DEFINITELY I WOULD BE OUT OF HERE.

The aim of this forum is to communicate in such a language that all members can follow the exchange of ideas. We have people in India and those in other countries. Thus our communication needs to be in a common language. Unfortunately, all members would not be able to read the Devnagri script (the script in which Hindi is written) nor is sign language an option. While it may bruise the ego of some diehard Indians, English seems to be the language that all members of this forum would be able to read and write.

This English it is.

best regards

Mr. Abraham Paul, I cannot for one second agree with you that ENGLISH is an inferior language. Do you know that english is the second most used language in the world?

Dear Ms. Kaladeen, I have some different views:  Of course, it is simple etiquette to use a common language while in a group. The trouble is that the rule applies only for people of the developing countries. In a closer look, it reduces down to who wants whom. There was a time the people in the Colonies were dependant of the Colonialists.  Things will change with the change in socio-economic scenario.

In case of common community websites, language choice should rest with the one who subscribe as far as he/she is clear about the target group intended within the global web community. If some members think that they can use  other language more effectively, let it be. However, the responsibility to post it only to the intended group also rests with the one who subscribe. It can be done by starting an exclusive community for postings Hindi for the target group so that others are not bothered with it.  If it is not practical, a better way is to include a transcrpt in English.

P.S. I have no affinity for a particular language. I am more at ease with English than Hindi. But it should not bias me against neutral observation in a debate.  Is it not these debates are for? For example, just because English is being used as a common media for communication between majority of people of different countries, it does not alter the fact that English is an inferior language in comparison with many others. It is only my personal opinion and I do not force it on others. But recently, the experience is that few members take it personal and respond accordingly
