World over Governments are introducing programmes to educate people on the benfits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Ensuring /Providing Mironutrition security is beoming is gaining importance. India Ayurvedi traditions) is rich in knowledge on the benifts of fruits and vegetables. India is also rich in knowledge of agriculture. However today we are trying to modify fruits and vegetables under the guise of developing varities with the sole intension of inreasing production and reduce farm wastage using genetic moddifiation methods. This can result in destroying our genetic base. We may permanentlky lose our traditional varieties rich in vitamines, minerals, and lots of health benifits. SHould we permanently ban genetic modifiation of fruits and vegetables. Instead concentrate on reduce population to reduce requirement of foods.
Unless and until we have a system in place to preserve existing varieties and safe gauads against contaminations of existing varities, methods in place to control the use of scientific methods and farmers we should not encourage BT Brinjal. There are lot of information available in the Inernet posted by several authros and agencies inccluding reaserch results on helth benifits. However it is so confusing since in general these studies do not mention which varity of brinjal. The nutritive values and benefits may differ depending upon the varity.
