Hello Members,
I need help in making a decision of career in computer networking. I'm a hotel graduate with over 8 yrs experience in hospitality, facilities management, infrasturcture etc. I want to expand my career base from customer service to IT. Few of my friends suggested me of computer networking as a good option, however they lack details on how to start, where to start, career ladder and growth rate.
It would be really helpful to have expert comments on the same. Many thanks in advance.
Hello Prashant,
As you said that you are a hotel graduate, so you should start your career in IT in respect of same field, deciding that what all are requirements for your line in IT. Because it will add weightage in your CV and also in monetary terms. This is a good decision that your freinds gave you reg networking. As these days all hotel category is going for broadband, wireless network to provide their clients a tech service. So I wil suggest you to go for Network Engineer and System Manager. You can start with MCSE and then CCNA andlearn the wireless technology, which is must in your line.
All the best to you from my side......

No one except you is the right one to suggest you any career, career is what you are within..
Hi Prashant,
Many view computer networking as one of the best and "hottest" career fields available today but networking involves mostly hard work, and competition for the high-quality positions will always be strong. Several types of positions exist in networking, each with different average salaries and long-term potential, and one should possess a clear understanding of these.
The basic job titles one sees for computer networking and networking-related positions include
* Network Administrator
* Network (Systems) Engineer
* Network (Service) Technician
* Network Programmer/Analyst
* Network/Information Systems Manager
Salaries for networking positions depend on many factors such as the hiring organization, local market conditions, a person's experience and skill level, and so on.
Self-study in networking is always effective and underrated by many. Other way to gain networking experience is to pursue a full-time programming or help desk "internship" during the summer months, or a part-time "work study" job at school. You must also gain and keep a certifications like Microsoft MCSE and Cisco CCNA.
Best wishes for a successful career...
