After all the applause for being the cheapest car in the world, the Tata Nano is back in the news again. Tata’s drawing up plans to build an electric and hybrid model using its platform. The Nano was built to fulfill the basic transportation needs of a family but the car compromises on nothing, be it safety, mileage, performance and emissions. The Tata Nano is compared to legendary cars in the market like the Ford Model-T which brought a revolution in the automobile industry. A Tata Group is planning to make this as a platform for some higher end models too which will be sold at higher prices and will give greater profits. Most probably these higher end models will be sold in the international markets. Tata also have plans to introduce variants in Brazil, Indonesia, China and Russia. The Bajaj Chetak and Maruti 800 created history in the Indian automobile industry; the Tata Nano also has all the firepower to redo the same thing. So there are pretty good chances of India and global markets to have a Tata Nano petrol, a Tata Nano diesel, a Tata Nano Convertible, a Tata Nano Station Wagon, a Tata Nano Electric and a Tata Nano Hybrid variants in the coming years.

Please give your views, according to you, how this concept will help TATA NANO ?

It will help Nano for what???

While its confirmed that the Nanos have passed the NCAP, which also means the car has pretty tough chassis to take any future loads.

However, when all the upgrade / body style for the Nano is good news for the company how is that going to be accept by the masses is a different ballgame alltogether.Personally rather than wasting the money on all that right now TATA better invest in better dies and make better quality in its fit and finsh for the complete product lineup.

This decision will indeed help TATA NANO a lot in publicity. It will also generate  lot of revenue for the young car. But what I feel is, since it is recently launched and already is getting a very good public demand, TATA should wait NANO to get well established in the market. Get a good catchup there. Should introduce new new features in to the car so that demand increases, then should invest money in other sectors...

Business is "Evolving with time and setting standards" Tata's have been agile in the last few years and they definitely understand the dynamics as their responses indicate. More than a hybrid what si required is an electric car may be powered with some real practical home community solution. The last is better as it becomes more sustanaible and the platform should change and innovate with time.

I think its will going to help Nano platform but making electric and hybrid varients is definately not going to be cheap and development cost is also high compared to patrol varient,so at the end it will increase cost to manufacturer and respectively cost to customer. And same with diesel varient, diesel engines are more costly to manufacture then patrol siblings.
