1. Looking at the TV image of the concrete pillar, it appears that the steel reinforment bewteen the Pillar and the cantilever portion of it is very much inadequate. If it is so, is it a deficiency of engineering design or wilful cheating by contractors?

2. Looking at today's accident of 3 cranes giving away, it appears there is toal lack of supervision. How come the cranes were not anchored properly to prevent toppling?

How come such an efficient project had gone to this sort of miserable situation? Can some engineers in Delhi who had opportunity to have a look at this can explain?

To day in his discussion with the media person, Mr. Sreedharan agreed that the Metro Pillar P.67 failed due to defect in design and inferior quality in material usage and construction practices as I mentioned in this Q&A.

Just by observing few seconds of video footage in the news, if I could come to the conclusion about the inadequacy of the steel reinforcement and quality of concrete, I am astonished how it went through the quality control systems that should have been in place in such an important project work. It is evident that this could have happened with the connivance of many in various departments and sections of the project.

There is no reason why we should not take comments of a person like Mr. Sreedharan fully in its face value. Then the matter is considered too severe as the malpractice would have affected many other Pillars and other components of the project which will be devastating in due course, and that is eactly the reason I brought up this issue under this Q&A in TooStep.

We are tallking of big investment in infrastructure projects. if such corruptions are allowed flourish, we will be playing with lives of thousands and loss of massive wealth and property. It is most important that the culprits are identfied and taken into severe task to prevent such malpractices happen everywhere.

The accident at Delhi metro has happened due to negligence at all level. Mr Sridharan as team leader can on be absolved of his responsibility on entire episode. If one compares number of incidents in phase one of DMRC and Phase two (now under progress) it is evident that systems have been diluted. Unfortunately Mr. Sridharan did not wakeup during all this time. I agree with Mr Viktor Stephen we always take it for granted that life is cheap here.

Now that the findings of enquiry committee has been submitted, and it is agreed that this accident is due to design failure, Mr Sridharan must find answer, how such faulty designs can get past design review cell and proof consultants of DMRC.

It is a pity to see our civili engineers cannot even load properly a cantilever. I don't know whether it iwas a slip or breakage due to shear. If it is shear then what Mr. Abraham Paul says might be correct the load was acting before the pillar.

In a country where the citizen has no opportunity to endow themselves legitimate means these sort of things are of no surprise. Look at the beggars frolicking the streets.

well sridharan only could have made delhi metro which  makes a person feel like travelling in heaven.

sincerity can be judged from the fact that he offered his resignation.

mishaps are a part and parcel of our endeavours of creating technological wonders.

just see delhi & take a ride in metro to feel how metro has changed delhi and the lives of delhites.

sridharan , we want you to complete the entire project connecting noida , gurgaon & then pass on the baton to whom you think can run the show.

Its not correct to say that cantilever should not be provided for such loading, till now metro rails are running on these structure succesfully, this can be checked atleast for steel and concrete whether they were used as per design and norms, otherwise this will be a subject of investigation that why the accident has occured at the same place three times,Then the question of some bad evil may arise.

Life is cheap in India. There will be a routine inquiry into the incident and after few months everyone will forget about this. This is not the first time such incident has happened nor the last.

Thanks for the referral. I read about this in the news. There is nothing I can add to this. Let the engineers do their work. An investigation should be done on the factors made in your comment.

Prima facie, it appears that the reinforcement steel rods and the strength of concrete between the  Pillar and its Cantilever portion projecting on one side are inadequate in strength, quality and designwise. May be some of the rods might have broken off while the cantilever collapsed. The reason appears to be that the one end of the bridge was placed improperly making the major portion of he load to act on the cantilever portion instead of on the piller.

It could have happened  due to mechanical failure of the crane, by human error or careless handling of the whle operation. In any major projects of this magnitude, accidents happen. What prompted me to raise theissue is that if it is a common problem of wilful malpractice, and mis-appropriation of the quality, in design, usage of materials and construction practice, it is a very serious affair.
