Hi all,
There is no doubt that VMware is the pioneer in x86 virtualization, where citrix is a late player in the server virtualization arena.
I have been playing with VMware workstation/server/vSphere (ESXi) since more than half a decade. Since more than a year i got my hands-on Citrix XenServer eversince i have been using it even in my home brewed lab, built virtual infrastructure @work place for test & development environment.
Now i feel the urge to accomplish the certification.
VMware's prerequisite to attend an official course ( 5 days full time) costing approx $3900 made me apprehensive to shell the savings.
On the other side it has been my real experience that citrix xenserver works flawlessly and performs equally to that of vmware's ESXi with exception of few features.
i dont understand why technology people who talk too much about cost cutting and when it comes to implementation thinks that cheaper technology means less realibility.
At times i suspect third party software developers that prefers to develop application (management, backup, monitoring etc..) with respect to VMware and not Citrix XenServer.
Am not against VMware popularity being an IT professional it would unethical to disregard it. There are companies who can afford VMware will go with it, SMB's why dont they poke there head and seek VMware alternative, citrix Xenserver. I haven't tried Microsoft Hyper-V so no comments on it.
Is it worth investing in VMware certification, now where players like citrix & microsoft are emerging slowly but surely.
i prefer to go with Citrix XenServer, other than US job market hardly very few jobs available to CCA XenServer in other job markets.
vote ur recommendation vmware or citrix.

LONG TIME NO SEE, HOW HAVE YOU BEEN?
I GO WITH VMWARE, IT IS FLEXIBLE SUPPORTS ALL MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEMS FROM WINDOWS 3.1 TO WINDOWS SERVER 2008 64X EDITION WHERE YOU CAN CONFIGURE EACH OPERATING WITH DIFFERENT HARDWARE CONFIGURATIONS. COPY AND MOVE OPTION FACILITATES TO MOVE EACH VIRTUAL SERVER FROM ONE DRIVE TO AN ANOTHER DRIVE,THAT MAKES ADMINISTRATION EASIER.
FOR EXAMPLE: - (HOST MACHINE) IF PHYSICAL MOTHERBOARD HAS DUAL CORE OR CORE 2 DUO PROCESSOR THAN YOU WILL HAVE A CHOICE TO USE EITHER SINGLE PROCESSOR OR DOUBLE PROCESSOR, BECAUSE AS WE KNOW "DUAL PIPE-LINE CONCEPT" IN PROCESSORS AND MAY EVEN INCREASE DEPENDS ON THE KIND OF PROCESSOR, SOME PROCESSORS EVEN HAVE 4 TO 8 PIPELINES, I GUESS, MAYBE I AM RIGHT. AND THERE IS NO NEED TO DOUBT THE SPEED, THAT IS WORTH WATCHABLE, I MUST SAY. TO CONFIGURE ALL THESE OPTIONS I THINK ONE SHOULD HAVE SOUND KNOWLEDGE IN HARDWARE ENGINEERING BECAUSE ANY MISCONFIGURATION WILL SIMPLY CRASHES THE ENTIRE PHYSICAL SYSTEM, WHAT I MEAN TO SAY IS APPEARANCE OF BSOD (BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH), ESPECIALLY WHILE ADDING ETHERNET CARDS, INCREASING MEMORY, HARD DISK DRIVE (IDE, SCSI) ETC.
WHEN I USED TO CONFIGURE WINDOWS SERVER 2003 ON VIRTUAL SERVER ON THE PHYSICAL SYSTEM WHICH HAD DUAL CORE PROCESSOR, SOMETIMES MY PHYSICAL SYSTEM WOULD HANG (NOT ALWAYS), BECAUSE I USED TO OPEN MULTIPLE VIRTUAL MACHINES ON MY PHYSICAL MACHINE FOR ROUTING PURPOSE. THEN I THOUGHT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM AND TRANSFERRED ALL VIRTUAL MACHINES TO A NEW LAPTOP WHICH HAD MUCH BETTER HIGHER CONFIGURATION THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE. NOW I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM BECAUSE I CAN DO MANY THINGS AT A TIME, EVERYONE WILL RAISE THEIR EYEBROWS BECAUSE, NOW I OPEN MANY WINDOWS SERVER 2008 SYSTEMS (VMs) AT A TIME, EVEN MY SYSTEM DOES NOT HANG UP. NOW VMWARE HAS BECOME QUITE FRIENDLY WITH ME ALLOWS ME TO DO WHATEVER I WANT. NO NEED TO MENTION ABOUT SWITCH BECAUSE IT SUPPORTS PHYSICAL SWITCH ALSO AND YOU CAN INSTALL ADDITIONAL VIRTUAL SWITCH AS WELL IN EACH VIRTUAL MACHINE, ISN'T IT AN ADVANTAGE IN VMWARE, IS IT?
VIRTUAL MACHINE CONFIGURATION IS A CAKEWALK.
MOREOVER, MOST OF THE MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES LIKE ACCENTURE, WIPRO SEEK FOR A CANDIDATE WHO HAS SOUND KNOWLEDGE IN VIRTUAL SERVERS, SO WHO CAN SKIP VMWARE, CAN ANYBODY DARE TO SKIP IT, I DO NOT THINK SO.
