Sometimes..........I get confused........are we teaching our children or children are learning by following us......further.........many times.......I think....we do not have much to teach our children.........but....we can learn lot from the children..........what do u think...
The phrase "Child is the father of man" probably means that the traits shown in an adult are formed while he was a child meaning thereby that the personality of a man is derived from his childhood days. But at times children can teach us also because their minds are pure and free of biases which adults have. They can think differently than adults because they have not been "educated" to think in a particular way. Our thinking becomes a little stereotyped with all our upbringing and education. Children do not suffer from this disadvantage. It is also true, that the present generation of children is quick to learn and can probably outsmart adults in some areas, eg, use of technology.
Bachhe mana ke sachhe ... Sari jaga ke aankh ke tarre, Ye woh nanhe fool (or fuul) hain jo ... Bhagawan ko lagate pyare !
Nice Q (... ?), indeed Yogendra ! I feel the children learn a lot by watching / listening to what the elders do or don't do and unless they are wise, intelligent and sharp which may not be always, they can do lot of wrong or ill learning ...
Moreover, as mentioned by others, elders and everyone can learn from everyone and definitely childrens also especially things about simplicity and purity, since they are not so programmed / educated in polluted way of world thinking, and so they can teach the elders and others in many respects !
Now the trend in Personality and Self - Development Training Courses is becoming child - like again; Also, nobody can feel real happiness, inner peace and balance and really enter the kingdom of heaven or God, unless he is childlike ... with a caution here, that he must be mature, learned in certain ways in arts and crafts & worldly ways and not childish or fool or ignorant (Agyan), which the elders and others can certainly teach the children in many ways and lastly in teaching the children also, the elders (including the teachers) can simultaneously learn lot of things as learning is never ending and is a life long process !
So both kind of interactive process must go on ... In giving we get more & more and in teaching we learn many things; therefore let us go on sharing where we can ...
Purity and innocence make children free from prejudice and they do not wear masks hiding their thoughts. But unfortunately when these children grow up they change and become biased and the attitude of the family members and peers influence their thinking. They learn to discriminate, dominate, respect, honor, share, love, etc during the childhood. Parents or any elders can teach (not in the education sense) children and correct them when they are wrong. On the other side, there are a lot to learn from children as they are more exposed to realities than their forerunners are. Our education system also has taken a rapid stride enhancing their thinking and analytical ability. Most parents now find solutions for their problems from children, no matter how big they are! I do. They may not precisely give a solution, but we get a good direction.
I agree to the statement that Beena and most of you given here. This newer generation is more and more intelligent also gets more exposure to media like television and internet.I also learn a lot of techniques and tools from the children around . So we give them more liberty . But their social behavioural pattern can become more complex in such situations if we don't take sincere effort to teach them our culture heritage.I feel our children will be the best if they READas much as they can
human being is a constant learned and teacher without any age/sex/caste/race discrimination.right from the mother's womb a baby starts learning and teaches any elder how to look at others eyes straightly without any hesitation or fear.this is only an example. learning or teaching depends on indivisuals how they accept it.
In "My Heart Leaps Up," Wordsworth says, "The Child is Father of the man" What does that mean?
To me, it means that the way a child is brought up determines what he or she will become in the future. It means that your experiences as a child determine what type of person you will be when you grow up, that is, the environment you grow up in makes you what you are later in life. Today's children will be the fathers of tomorrow's men. It makes one realize how much potential a seemingly innocent, small, and insignificant child has. This proverb also implies that whatever we teach our children, we must expect to see in future generations, because those will be the attitudes, ideas, and values that our children will pass on to THEIR children.
It is generally believed that we teach our children everything, But sometimes we forget some important things ourselves. It is by observing our children that we may be able to learn a few of them back. So even children can be our parents i.e teach us lots.
The best comes when the do the same unto us as we do to our parents. So be careful of wat you are teaching your children. It just may backfire on you.
I leave you with this thought provoking poem:
KARMA
THE child is the father of the man, and none the less true is it:
My brothers! each man’s life
The outcome of his former living is;
The bygone wrongs bring forth sorrows and woes
The bygone right breeds bliss.
"This is the doctrine of Karma.”
