As a beginer here are some tips for your story. I'll keep it short and sweet for your easy understanding.
1. Always think with the customer/visitor in mind, not the search engines. i.e. write stories (interesting, funny, sad) anything that stirs peoples emotions will drive traffic to your site and get people to link to your site which of course will increase your rankings within the search engines.
2. Include pictures and videos which can be hosted on youtube and flickr, and posted on your website. This has several effects. Your hosting material for free on both sites, your adding material to your site to keep the visitor engaged, both flickr and youtube gets tons of traffic and a little of that traffic can spill over to your site.
3. KISS, keep it simple silly! Don't get all complicated when your starting out. One press release a month is more than enough to keep your traffic coming in, and build a few links. No need to spend thousands on an outrageous design or back end system when your starting out. Use a blog service such as wordpress to stat your site and watch how easy it is to add content on a daily basis without having to pay anyone, for any services.
4. Once your site is up and running, don't sit still, always tweak and and make it better.
5. Consider pay-per-click (PPC) ads, even if your budget is small. A few hundred dollars can go a long way with internet ads, but only buy you an ad in a lousy magazine that will probably never bring you business. There is one PPC agency now offering management services for as little as $99/month, mine :) Constant Click
6. Start collecting visitors email lists and start a monthly newsletter that will help create and expand your brand, idea, business etc...
7. There's alot more to learn, so feel free to email me at jp@constantclick.com for more FREE tips and tricks.
