Conceptually, the IPL looks exciting but what are potential Downsides of IPL?
According to me not enough eyeballs & not enough star players are potential downside of IPL.
It is so because of:-
* Sony-WSG and the franchises could suffer losses if IPL fails to wins over spectators and viewers, and draws a critical mass.
* Constant availability of top overseas players may not be possible, due to growing number of international Cricket tournaments.
I think too much money is coming into the game and this will affect cricket, a large chunk of audience for test matches has been lost due to the IPL, and Test matches are the place where one can know the true capability of player, even though one dayers are doing pretty well, but this aggressive promotion of IPL and the T20 format will affect the game overall like how it is played, and with so much money pumped in by the franchisees for the players and the initial millions of dollars payed to buy the franchisees, and they want to earn it back pretty soon, with Broadcasting rights going for a whopping more than 1Billion $ they want as many ad slots during the game, and to make more money for the broadcaster they are now having 7 minute break after 10 overs, so that they can put some more ads and generate more revenue, with so much money on the line, crickets charm will be lost..And at every players back of the mind will be like ok they have bought me for millions and i have to perform,,,,money will drive the cricket and not the other way around....and what about others who didn't get selected in the IPL auction, suddenly there are people from other national squad earnig millions and other players don't and this is creating imbalance in the Team,, as one would have witnessed the Engalnd teams debacle against westindies right after the auction...And mainly one can't expect the same level of commitment from the players while they are playing for the franchisees as they commit themselves towards the national team...
