One thing that was left out was the packaging design itself. It is an important consideration because it will have HUGE impact on transportation.

Following steps need to be kept in mind to get perfect packaging of products:

1) Identify the end usage - Where and how is it going to be displayed. Also factor in the area of display that would normally be available to you

2) Packaging material - this will usually depend upon the product nature itself (corrosive, vacuum pack etc.)

2) Visibility - is your product a stand alone one or is it in a crowded segment like shampoos for instance

3) Variants - what are the different variants that you would need to introduce for this product? Like soft drinks that come in bottle s, PET containers and cans

4) Reach - Is your product confined to the cities or is it intended for rural areas also

5) Transportation - this should factor in points like volume occupied by the product, frequency of delivery, handling etc. For e.g.: Mineral Water cans occupy a lot of space and are usually thrown on board by the delivery boys - so the plastic used for these cans have to be thick so that they dont get damaged easily

6) Design - Buy far the most important point and mentioned last because when a design is done for a packaging it needs to incorporate all of the above points.

As for the second part of your question: Packaging is very important in todays world because of competition, shrinking retail display space and costumer recall.

I hope these hep you. Feel free to write-in in case of further queries.

Thanks & Regards

Jay

Well packaging is very important for any product. It is required for two things, one for protecting the product and the other reason is that it gives the vital product information to the consumers. Well there are no set points or steps regarding what is a perfect packaging because it depends on the product, but there are a few things you must do in order to make sure that you packaging does not lack and essential thing. These are;

  • Start by visiting retail outlets that sell a similar product. Don't go to all the same type of outlets everytime. Go to a variety of outlets: drug, convenience, grocery, supermarket, specialty and so on. At the same time, don't get carried away with visiting every conceivable outlet. You are looking for packaging that you can adapt for your specific needs and purposes.
  • In order to package a product, you must first narrow down the resource and material universe.
  • Listen to what other people have to say about your product packaging. This would help you to enhance your decision criteria and help you to choose the best packaging material.

I hope that this would have solved some of your doubts.
