The current trend is through taking student feedback, but there is much more that a member of the faculty has to perform / achieve than just teaching. This could include being a mentor, a leader, updating on knowledge, awareness of current market scenario, etc.
Various programs could include variations in how employees are appraised and for how long. There are several questions agencies should address when designing appraisal programs.
There are many factors to consider when designing a performance appraisal program. These factors include considering the persons who will be involved in the designing of the programs, looking at past performance and programs, setting program goals, and deciding on what gets measured.

Parameters that could go into designing an appraisal system for educational institutions should focus on --
1. Brand value of the institution
2. Feedback from the students and other members
3. Comparative analysis with other institutions
4. Quality level of the Faculties of the institution
5. Number of research activities (e.g. papers published, articles authored, patents registered, etc.) undertaken by the institution
6. Social activities undertaken by the institution to foster a climate of educational cooperation with other institutions and society
7. Participation in national level activities for improving education at the macro level
8. Level of Infrastructural facilities available at the institution
9. Affiliation with international/national educational organizations
10. Conduction of conferences, seminars and linkages with industry - academia focus and consultancy activities undertaken. Focus on the number of interactions with other institutions.
Creation of a multiple level category weighted appraisal ranking system should help to design an effective appraisal system for educational institutions. However, it is to be noted that the appraisal system only approximates various factors (qualitative and quantitative) in the form of a rating scale and score. There are always factors that are difficult to quantify and the appraisal system at the most will be only an approximation of these factors.
