The PMP certification cannot guarantee the a project manager is competent, if he an experience, then he can apply this methodology to their work.

If a project manager can apply this to his work then he can become a better manager, but he have to posses other skills too...

Pursuing the PMP certification may allow you to fill gaps in your knowledge.

Getting a PMP certification will not make you a better project manager, its the skills you posses will make you a better Project Manager. His decision making skills, communication, leadership etc will define your success as a Project Manager.

If you have already had significant project management experience, I would recommend that you pursue that certification instead.
