Dear Mr Majumdar,

Thanks for asking a lovely question. I m eager to read opinions of different experienced and educated professionals.

I m a retailer and have experience of 10 years in retail, wouldl like to cotribute my idea for your question.

Actually in my opinion, it depends on what the product is??? and what segmet you want to target??? Means in my opinion it will differ from product to product and segment to segment how it shall be sold? For an example, let us take future group. They have their store big bazar (which in my opinion is one of the best store for FMCG). But the same group is selling electrical durables with their brand E-Zone and apparels by Pantaloon. Now if we analyse the selling stretgy and store format of all the three  stores of same group we will find them diffrent as they are targetting different segments and selling different products .Although Big bazar is also selling electricals and apparels but they are targeting very different segments. So it is difficult especially in Indian market how your store should be as in India, paying capicity, culture, traditions every thing changes after few kilometers. So you have to add some local spice in your market staretgy and   store format. If you find my idea right  let us discuss what product are you talking about and  then we shall decide to what segment we can sell it best and then store format. I  think Indian market needs its own books, own formulae and own stertetgies. Only learning from US market won't give us that big success in Indian conditions.

I'd say its too early to comment on this. Apart form lifestyle retail, I do not recall any other format that has been successfuly performing across the country

Ours being a diverse country, each region has its different culture, traditions, demographic exclusivity and preferences which makes the retailers think hard to tailor the right kind of model. Even the same city witnesses different models in seperate areas. Being a relatively new industry, the business is evolving and  will take time to deliver the right kind of replicable model

The neighbourhood mom & pop store for emergency needs & the well designed super store like' More' for relaxed planned purchase with comforts of shopping experience in a mall.

There is no single type that is suitable, but always it is co-existance of variety.

In Delhi, current scenario I give no1 position to BIG BAZAR,#2 subhiksha,#3reliance,#4sabkabazar,#5is 6ten.Now why I rated these top 5 because the size of the retail chain, no of customers, commodities they are having, popularity, timings, schemes.

though the traditional system of retails are still doing well but they improve themselves by learning new technology.

Dear Sir,

the question you asked is very tricky and very debatable. India is a country with space for every body. the gentry is variable. There are people who are in ultra rich and the people are suffering from inflation. Therir are people who have their coffee at barista and ccd and the same time there are people who go for roadside vendors.Therir are people who shop in debenhams and shoppers and same time their is population who go to subhiksha for deep discounts. It depends upon you what kind of product category you launch and which segment you are planning into. But only thing you have to keep in mind is that every individual  look for for a rise and try to go into the store who can make them feel special and boost their entity. Wheather  it would be a small format store or larger store. Sir if you can make your question little bit more clear.then again i will try to elobrate as per my knowledge.

Regards,

Vinay Kumar

Dear Majumdar,It is true that it all depends on which customer segment you want to target for your store.Which type and what price range you wish to have in your store. Is there any brand loyalty with your product or not?As now Big Bazaar is doing great but shoppers stop is not doing any bad numbers, both are targeting different segment of the customers in there store although there will be some customers who are common to both the stores.

Regards,

Kartik
