Super markets as a concept are here to stay. It not only offers great prices and variety but also puts the customer in charge of determining the market dynamics. When 2 or 3 different brands are displayed next to each other, higher price can only be charged if a similar product offers quite differentiated percieved value.

I think Hypermarkets will be the key differentiator among all the formats. “Size does Matter”- With changing lifestyle and awareness levels, customer enjoys shopping in a Hypermarket that offers him both width & depth in each product category along with best possible promotions. They cater to customers from all income groups. On personal level, I was very impressed with the category offered to customers by Hypermarkets recently opened in Mumbai, Ahmedabad & Surat. It is an experience for shoppers also. This kind of format force customers to plan there monthly purchase both in terms of day to day articles to even white goods. In addition, for remaining categories they will be dependent on neighborhood supermarket/ kirana shop and for fashion they will go to near by established high street or departmental store. Biggest company in the world is itself a Retailer and majority of his turnover comes from there Hypermarkets.

I think a Super Market concept would be best for Indian customers, because they will get variety at a cheaper price and this is what attracts Indian customers.
