I don't think so...the reason being is, I shop at Tesco on a regular basis, as I have been shopping with Tesco for more than 8 years.. One thing I notice while shopping in Tesco’s or for the matter at any Supermarket in UK, like Sainsbury or Asda or Waitrose, is that how less Local Produce are been sold... there are hardly any British Produce , except for some perishable items like Milk and Eggs...
I am adherent fan of local produce...I notice Tesco or the other supermarkets, i mentioned above, have always sold the local produces way higher than the foreign produces... one of the reason for this is, UK's strict quality control and general awareness of the people of organic products and farm produces in UK. Tesco and other super markets, always try and get produces from various parts of the world were the products are produced with less strict regulations on the type of pesticides used, GM produces, or "battery Chickens and Eggs" (though these supermarkets always deny this fact)... HENCE, these foreign products are kept at cheap level... so CHEAP products means; more profits to Tesco's but the buyers end up with CHEAP results....
Supermarkets are here to make money for their shareholders, not to give you the best products at a cheap price...these supermarkets, try and squeeze the lower possible rates for the farmer’s produces and then pass it on to us for higher value..(The logic is, Tesco can sell milk at Rs.10 always, when they only pay peanuts for the farmers and none of us realise, unless the farmers are paid well, they won't able to treat their cows humanely, this is not because they don’t want to, but THEY can't afford to..... so if the cows are not kept or fed well, they won't produce good milk, just like the taste of a organic farm chicken against the battery chicken .....
We should all say no to these BIG corporate, who already made us to eat burgers, drink coke and made us OBESE and ILL, and then sell Medicines at higher price..... had we stick to our local foods and produces, we don't become OBESE and need any Medicine to live....
Ofcourse the emergence of Foregn layers in Indian Retail space will open doors for newer and better goods for Indian consumers.
It will also gerenate a fair competetion for Indian counterpart companies to match the expectations of consumers whether on price or quality.
In both ways consumer has options to compare and bench march.
Thats the compettitive edge.
