New Delhi: On January 1, 2008 India woke up to images of two women being assaulted by a mob of 80 men as they stepped out of a five star hotel in Mumbai. Most Indians argued they weren't properly dressed.
According to an exclusive CNN-IBN-Hindustan Times survey, eight out of 10 Indians feel that rape and sexual harassment are linked to the way women dress. Infact it's the changing role of women in society that's making men aggressive. Around 80 per cent say that's the reason for increased violence against women.
And late nights still generate fear in most minds. Almost 69 per cent men feel uncomfortable if their wives or sisters work till late in office.
Actress Bipasha Basu may be an image of women empowerment in the film Corporate but six out of 10 men feel uncomfortable working with bold, aggressive women. When asked who would they prefer as a boss, most say they are fine with either men or women.
Interestingly, more than 50 per cent of those interviewed said working women do not neglect their family duties.
But close to 90 per cent feel that women are misusing rape and dowry laws to target men.
What is your comment on this?
We all know how the numbers & percentages can be calculated to the one you want. Today we can talk about women empowerment, contemporary Women, but the fact remains the same- India still remains a male dominating society. The country has indeed come out of the age of all women as housewives( the only profession to look for). But how many have accepted this change is not known. There are more no. of women who quit their work without lodging any complaints of such harassments, they do not even talk about it when surveyed. Even if she is properly dressed, she becomes the glint of the eyes of passer by.
We often forget that the labors & the house-maids are also women who work. A women in Indian society can earn respect only when she speaks up, value herself & is encouraged. With increasing awareness, even rural women are coming up to take their stand. Literacy also plays a role somewhere. There are men who understands, support, guide & look upto women as they are, & for what they are. Thumbs up to them & a genuine gratitude from all the women.
I give respect to all the women, because they bear child for ten months. But a male person do not bear such pain as borne by a female. In my experience, what i have felt, women are very materialistic. For example, Ambani gifted a aeroplance to her wife amounting five thousand crores, and within the said amount atlest one lakhs women could have been provided with shelter. Can the bolly wood and holly wood stars donate their 50% income to homeless people of India? Women are very materialistic and most of the time black mail and exploit their husban by using sexual appetitive as a weapon.
I think most of the women take the modernization in the wrong sence, I have worked in the BPO industry and the dresses which women wear in the call centers & BPO's are worst, I mean they think if they show up the skin then they are modern..
If working of women in the corporates is always welcome by India, but dressing should be proper, There was an incident in one of the call centers where a Cab Driver has raped a Call Center Executive, my friend works with the same Call Center, he told that Girls dressing was too short that the driver must have got *** & I am not saying that it was not the Driver's fault, but there is a saying in hindi " Fog comes when there is fire somewhere"
Well I have a different point of view on this. Being part of HR I need to ensure that the organizational dress code is followed properly. And trust me its not only women that u need to correct there are some men as well whom u need to give feedback about their dressing. To comment on the incident that is narrated I feel its high time we stop holding women responsible for such incidents. The way some of the men dress now - a -days is also equally vulgar however have u ever heard a man being assaulted by a group of women. So stop saying women invite the attention. It all boils down to ur own personality, values, upbrining, self control etc.
As far as the topic of working women is concerned even now in most of the cases a women's income is a secondary income and she is expected to sacrifice her career as and when need arises.
India has a stange mix of people. People who wordhip Kali and Laxmi and Sarawati!! All these women who incidentally have more power vested in thme than all the pothers put together. Strength, Knowledge and Money!!
But we have diverse interests also. We also believe in Chandika. Goddess of the black world!!
I would just say here that what people may think and do is the person and his mental cpacity. I love my mother and hence I respect women species!! I am because she is....
Thanks for the referral Gargi! :)
If the question is on the sexual assault or rape with women, then I also believe in majority of cases, its because of their vulgar dress. Today's city life has become such that every second girl will wear body exposing or tight dresses. This indeed agitates men. And maniacs do these type of crimes.
As far as working of women is considered, the traditional Indian culture doesn't allow women to work with other men since they need protection.
If my view is considered, I'll allow women to work. But from their side, at least they should be concious. They shouldn't wear any type of agitating dress. There is nothing wrong in wearing Indian dress. Even corporates prefer that then why not to follow Indian dressing code. From company's point of view, they should take responsibility of the safely return of women to their home early finishing of working time and facilitating company cabs to drop them to their home. These steps will reduce the crime against women to a lot of extent...
Why this question arises every not and then? Why this question does not arise for men? Why every woman love answering this question? Everbody is equally empowered, the only thing is how they see their empowerment and then utilize/capitilize it.
I don't believe in the concept of EMPOWERING WOMEN, thats because, this itself is a negative thinking for me. When you talk about it then it means you are making a conscious transtition from being less significant to being more significant.
My point is simple, a woman should ask to herself "What I think about myself" rather than thiking "What people think about me?" The biggest problem that I find in a woman is, quite often they think from every other person's perspective rather than her own.
Women, Live your own script, and prove things to yourself. Quite often, Men do this where as women do not. You should not answer the Question " What India thinks of working women"............. you should answer " What I think about myself"
Cheers
Nilay
Thanks for the referral Gargi, however I prefer not to answer this question but to read the answers submitted by members. I have three(3) questions to ask and I refer to the first 2 sentences of your post.
If those 2 women were properly dressed or not, could they have avoided an assault by a mob of 80?
Were they attacked because they were not properly dressed?
Why were they attacked in the first place?

Sony is yet again ready to layoff 10,000 employees. It is not clear if this will be from Japan or overseas. This makes us think that how unpredictable can working in big brands be. We normally think that we should go for a big brand instead of... |
