The terms “quality assurance” and “quality control” are often used interchangeably to refer to ways of ensuring the quality of a service or product. The terms, however, have different meanings.

  • Assurance: The act of giving confidence, the state of being certain or the act of making certain.
    Quality assurance: The planned and systematic activities implemented in a quality system so that quality requirements for a product or service will be fulfilled.

  • Control: An evaluation to indicate needed corrective responses; the act of guiding a process in which variability is attributable to a constant system of chance causes.
    Quality control: The observation techniques and activities used to fulfill requirements for quality.

For further clarification, always welcome!

Regards,

Sachin

Quality assurance is proactive and takes control before the issue occures. Review , unit testing etc in software development can be treated as quality assurance activities. These are done proactively to determine the bug/issue at the phase of origin itself. Wheras quality control is reactive , It is something like testing which is carried out after the activity/phase is completed .Hence here any issue found will result in rework which is much costlier to fix.

Quality Control (QC) is a system of routine technical activities, to measure and control the quality
of the inventory as it is being developed. The QC system is designed to:
(i) Provide routine and consistent checks to ensure data integrity, correctness, and
completeness;
(ii) Identify and address errors and omissions;
(iii) Document and archive inventory material and record all QC activities.
QC activities include general methods such as accuracy checks on data acquisition and
calculations and the use of approved standardised procedures for emission calculations,
measurements, estimating uncertainties, archiving information and reporting. Higher tier QC
activities include technical reviews of source categories, activity and emission factor data, and
methods.
Quality Assurance (QA) activities include a planned system of review procedures conducted by
personnel not directly involved in the inventory compilation/development process. Reviews,
preferably by independent third parties, should be performed upon a finalised inventory following
the implementation of QC procedures. Reviews verify that data quality objectives were met,
ensure that the inventory represents the best possible estimates of emissions and sinks given the
current state of scientific knowledge and data available, and support the effectiveness of the QC
programme.

Adding to what sachin said. i would like to give my inputs

Quality assurance refers to planned and systematic production processes that provide confidence in a product's suitability for its intended purpose. It is a set of activities intended to ensure that products (goods and/or services) satisfy customer requirements in a systematic, reliable fashion.

Quality control are used in developing systems to ensure products or services are designed and produced to meet or exceed customer requirements.

hope you have got a satisfied answer.

Assurance starts right from the beginning of the process, it is an attitude of the person who is operating that process. exactly knowing the process parameters, its variation and impact of its variation. Assurance means failure prevention. Quality Assurance means maintaining the process parameters within standard deviation limits to achieve the desired quality product.

Quality control, it is a method based on statistical tools, comes at the end of the process. Where we identify the product deviation range from its desired parameters.

Quality Assurance (QA) : refers to planned and systematic production processes that provide confidence in a product's suitability for its intended purpose. It is a set of activities intended to ensure that products (goods and/or services) satisfy customer requirements in a systematic, reliable fashion.

Two key principles characterise QA: "fit for purpose" (the product should be suitable for the intended purpose) and "right first time" (mistakes should be eliminated).

Please note : It is important to realize also that quality is determined by the intended users, clients or customers, not by society in general: it is not the same as 'expensive' or 'high quality'. Even lowly bottom-of-the-range goods can be considered quality items if they meet a market need.

QA in Software Development:  Models & Standards

ISO 17025 is an international standarad that specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out tests and or calibrations. There are 15 management requirements and 10 technical requirements. These requirements outline what a laboratory must do to become accredited. Management system refers to the organization's structure for managing its processes or activities that transform inputs of resources into a product or service which meets the organization's objectives, such as satisfying the customer's quality requirements, complying with regulations, or meeting environmental objectives.

The CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) model is widely used to implement Quality Assurance (PPQA) in an organization. The CMMI maturity levels can be divided in to 5 steps, which a company can achieve by performing specific activities within the organization.

Quality Control (QC): Quality control emphasizes testing and blocking the release of defective products, quality assurance is about improving and stabilizing production and associated processes to avoid or at least minimize issues that led to the defects in the first place.

quality control and quality engineering are used in developing systems to ensure products or services are designed and produced to meet or exceed customer requirements. These systems are often developed in conjunction with other business and engineering disciplines using a cross-functional approach.

The QC system is designed to:

(i) Provide routine and consistent checks to ensure data integrity, correctness, and

completeness;

(ii) Identify and address errors and omissions;

(iii) Document and archive inventory material and record all QC activities.

QC activities include general methods such as accuracy checks on data acquisition and

calculations and the use of approved standardised procedures for emission calculations,

measurements, estimating uncertainties, archiving information and reporting. Higher tier QC

activities include technical reviews of source categories, activity and emission factor data, and

methods.

---------------------------------------------------

However, QA does not necessarily eliminate the need for QC: some product parameters are so critical that testing is still necessary just in case QA fails.

Quality Assurance: QA is evaluating the process,identifying
the defects and suggesting improvements for the same.
It is oriented towards "Prevention" eg:Audits,Reviews.

Quality Control: QC is evaluating the product,identifying
the defects and suggesting improvements for the same.
It is oriented towards "Detection" eg:Testing.
