What is professionalism? Is it a way of conduct? Is it a strategy? Is it a management outlook? Is it individualistc? Is it a behavior? Is it what human beings adhere to because they gave earned a specialisation? Is it because they are attached to a company and that means they have a code of consuct?? What is professionalism??
I think professionalism is not just being good at what you do but it has alot to do with how you do it. Like your character, not being lazy, being prompt, not being rude and if you are angry with a co-worker or employee or even your employer, tell them what upsets you or what isn't acceptable and be a good role model by doing this in an appropriate manner with out screaming or swearing. Your character makes you a professional, not your job or career. Great question Thanks! Have a wonderful day!
Professionalism in a person means his staying focussed and keeping himself gently back on the issues. Otherwise he will lose complete control over yourself and the situation.
A business interaction has a purpose and a goal. An excessive amount of jocularity of "kidding around'' will be seen as flippant. That does not mean that packing up natural sense of humour. The ideal is a combination of light humour, where and when appropriate with a complete seriousness to moving towards the goal that is demanded of the interaction. It means to understand ones "corporate culture'' and function within its parameters. Every business must set forth, not only to develop its own identity but also make sure that it is understood and translated in behaviour by the employees. All the corporate policies otherwise will remain just that, policies on paper. A professional should understand how to treat superiors, peers and subordinates with the utmost courtesy and in the proper accepted norms. That will differentiate him from the rest by giving the cutting edge advantage. More than his technical expertise and academic accomplishments you will be remembered and admired for your strict codes of conduct in your interactions. To accomplish a definite task and that should be done with complete integrity, commitment and pride in your job.
There is a difference between saying 'I am a teacher' and 'Teaching is my profession'. You can be a teacher for pastime or for livelihood; interesting or dull; serious or lax; efficient or inefficient. But if you have to be considered a teaching professional, it is automatically assumed that you are doing it for livelihood, i.e. as a regular work; you are serious and efficient. Haphazardness and professionalism are mutually eliminatory.
The BusinessDictionary.com defines Professionalism as follows:
Meticulous adherence to undeviating courtesy, honesty, and responsibility in one's dealings with customers and associates, plus a level of excellence that goes over and above the commercial considerations and legal requirements
A professional is thorough in his approach; his aim is perfection; his level of competence in the given field is very high; he is up to date in knowledge in the given field; he has undergone the necessary training; he maintains a high level of objectivity and dispassionate attitude; he takes pride in his activity; he faces any challenge with confidence; he conducts himself with orderliness and dignity; he is guided not by wild impulses by by noble principles; and his method of functioning is always marked by steadiness, grace and excellence.
Professionalism is can not be defined in true manner. every body interpret this term as per their own understanding and belief.
One of the important thing about professionalism is expertise in the work/industry or what ever we do. Time management / Work management / Feasibility of work is secondary matter.
I think very easily people say Professionalism means giving respect, taking and fulfilling responsibilities, keeping courtesy…, as many of us have been thought from our childhood about managing ourselves/things, but all this doesn't work or mean unless we follow it off screen, we are professionals when we also follow it when some watch dog is not watching us, and then proudly say yes we are professionals.
If we count from the step we enter in to the office premises the way we are parking our vehicle, the way we are spending our time waiting for elevator to come also shows how professional we are...
