concrete applied by spraying. Shotcrete is a mixture of aggregate and portland cement, conveyed by compressed air to the nozzle of a spray gun, where water is added. The wet mixture is then sprayed in place and may be carved or troweled almost immediately. For structural uses, shotcrete is usually applied over a framework of reinforcing bars and steel mesh. Because it can take any shape, is easily coloured, and can be sculptured after application, shotcrete is used for a variety of fancy concrete structures, including artificial rock walls, zoo enclosures, canopy roofs, refractory linings, pools, and dams. It is sometimes used in tunneling to bind the walls of the tunnel to prevent leaks and fragmentation.
Shotcrete comprises of aggregate generally passing 10mm seive, sand, cement and superplasticiser. This is sprayed using compressed air and the end of the nozzel, accellerator is added to incude quick initial set.
Shotcrete can be either dry or wet. Due to the dust generated by spraying dry shotcrete, generally wet shotcrete is used these days. Also with wet shotcrete better control over quality can be acheived and fibre (steel or poly) can be added for flexural strength.
Shotcrete is generally used in deep excavations(shaft) and tunnels where early support and strenght is required from safety and operational point of view. Shotcrete with fines has also found application to cover structural steel structures.
Shotcrete is also use for construction fo swimming pools.
With right application, shotcrete can acheive high compressive strengths of upto 50Mpa, very low permeability, density of upto 2350kg/m3 and great flexural strenghts. Regards
